Chavo Wants Piper To Pay For Injuring His Father

( from Oct. 1976 issue of "Wrestling Monthly" magazine )
Want to start Chavo Guerrero's Latin blood boiling ? Just mention the name, Roddy Piper.
You see Guerrero has a couple of scores to settle with the bagpipe-playing villain.
First, Piper dethroned Guerrero as Americas heavyweight champion. Then, ruthless Roddy took Chavo's
Jules Strongbow Scientific Trophy. However, Guerrero has a more personal reason for his relentless drive
for revenge as Piper not only injured Chavo's father, Gory, but also Guerrero's protage, El Azteca.
Guerrero has already reaped some vengeance by regaining the Strongbow Trophy. Chavo defeated a field
of 16 wrestlers, including Piper, in proving that he is indeed one of the finest scientific wrestlers in the
grappling game today. Before agreeing to bring the Strongbow Trophy out of retirement, however, Piper
made Guerrero agree to risk the humiliation of having a haircut in the ring ... if he lost.
So, Guerrero not only regained his trophy but also saved his Mexican mane. The Strongbow Trophy is now
on display at Strelich Stadium in Bakersfield, Calif., and Guerrero, not Piper, has the honor of putting the
trophy into retirement. Regaining the Americas' championship was next on Guerrero's agenda and the
mighty Mexican was again successful in setting another score with Piper.
However, Roddy again insisted that Chavo risk his hair in order to get a title slot. The scheming Scot has
become obsessed with humiliating Guerrero by having him shaved bald in the middle of the ring. Perhaps,
Piper feels that Chavo's strength, like that of Samson, comes from his hair.
Guerrero took Piper's title fair and square to the delight of the wrestling fans at Los Angeles' Olympic Audi-
torium, but the outcome didn't satisfy Piper, who petitioned the National Wrestling Alliance to uphold his
claim to the America's crown and has gone so far as to refuse to turn over the championship belt.
"Guerrero should be a man and shave his head as agreed in the contact. Guerrero is not the champion and
should have his head shaved in the middle on the ring and on television for all the fans to see," stated Piper.
Since the sadistic Scot refused to meet Guerrero in a head-to-head battle to resolve the Americans' cham-
pionship confusion once and for all, Chavo had to settle for a tag-team title tussle against Americas heavy-
weight champions Piper and Crusher Verdu, with John Tolos as his partner.
"I prefer to meet that despicable Piper man-to-man, but my goal is to strip him of every honor he has ever
won as well as inflicting lasting physical punishment to the Scotsman in retaliation for the injuries suffered by
my dad and El Azteca," stated Guerrero.
Piper and his partner Verdu delight in infuriating the crowd. Roddy flaunted his two championship belts, even
having gone so far as to have the Americas belt, which Guerrero claims is his, covered with his clan's plaid.
Despite the protests of referee John "Red Shoes" Dugan and a chorus of catcalls from the audience, Piper
insisted on 'treating' the fans to a bagpipe serenade prior to the match. When the serenade was completed,
both teams got down to business in a rock-'em, sock-'em, tag-team tussle that had tha fans out of their
seats and on their feet for most of the hour-long battle. The dastardly Piper-Verdu duo had the upper hand
in the early going, unloading their entire bag of illegal tactics. However, the 'good guys' Guerrero and Tolos,
bounced back using their scientific skill and acrobatic actions to take command of the contest.
The 60-minute time limit saved the day and the championship for Piper and Verdu as time ran out and the
contest was declared a draw, much to the champions' relief and disgust of the challengers.
Although they weren't defeated, Piper and Verdu certainly lost face among their few supporters as they were
forced to flee the ring and escape to the safety of the dressing room as Guerrero and Tolos were more than
willing to continue the battle after time had elapsed.
Their bid for the tag-team title thwarted - Guerrero and Tolos once held the Americas title by virtue of
a victory over the Infernos -- the challengers at least had the satisfaction of sending Piper and Verdu
scurrying to safety rather than standing and fighting like men.
While son Chavo has vowed to make Piper pay for his misdeeds, don't be surprised if papa Gory doesn't get
his own revenge. The elder Guerrero has recovered from injuries inflicted by Piper and it would be justice
indeed if Chavo and Gory Guerrero were to dethrone Piper and Verdu.
If the Guerreros have their way, the day isn't far off when Roddy Piper will be playing a different tune if he is
still able to play the bagpipes after the Guerreros get their revenge.
