The Guerreros Challenge The Von Erichs

( from February 1985 issue of "Wrestling's Main Event" magazine )
Over the last five years, there have been a number of changes in professional wrestling. New styles, new
stars, and new champions grace the ever growing wrestling scene. The major change, however, has been
the number of Junior Heavyweights entering the sport. When talking about the men under 225 pounds,
the name Guerrero is always brought up. Be it Chavo, Hector or Mando, the Guerrero name is respected
in the wrestling world. At the moment Chavo and Hector are doing their thing in Florida and Houston, Texas
while Mando is wowing the fans in the Pacific Northwest.
Wrestling's MAIN EVENT recently spoke to Mando Guerrero about his career and the changes in attitude
in his brothers. "Fans are finally starting to respect the Guerrero's," Mando said. "My brothers Chavo
and Hector have shown the world how great they are. This is only the beginning. Everyone definitely will
be hearing more and more about the sensational Guerreros in the months to come," Mando then went on
to say, "Some people don't like what they're doing, but they have been successful. That's all that really
matters, anyway. It doesn't matter how you win," Mando claimed. "Only that you win. A man our size
can't match power for power with a man standing over six feet and weighing over fifty pounds more.
We have developed a style all our own. I call it flip, flop and fly. My brothers have also used this style
effectively in the past. But now they are following the no-holds barred, win at any cost philosophy and
it's working. But actually Chavo and Hector are two of the best technical wrestlers in the sport.
Mando, unlike his brothers, hasn't yet lent himself to using rule-breaking tactics but that time may be
rapidly approaching. "I've been very successful," Mando admits. "But I've been held back by the promoters
due to my size. It's hard to convince a promoter to see money in a wrestler like me, but given a chance
I could win big. I know it ! My brothers proved they could in Florida. Now all I want is a fair chance.
With my aerial style, I can do it. The sport will always have big and small men," Mando added. "We've seen
a trend in this direction in boxing. Promoters are finally seeing lightweight fighters like Hector Comacho and
Tommy Hearns as big box office draws. There are some wrestling promoters who feel the same way, most
notably the Owens promotion in the Pacific Northwest. There is a market for the small man as well as the
big man. All these years people believed wrestling was a sport of giants, but the new light heavyweights have
changed all this. Look at men like Tom Pritchard, Brett Sawyer, Curt Hennig, Rick McGraw. They are better
than most of today top heavyweight and supply much more action and excitement."

At the moment, the Guerrero Brothers are at opposite ends of the United States, but the miles haven't
kept the brothers apart. They still talk regularly and recently Chavo and Hector stopped over in Portland
to visit with Mando while on their way back from Japan. Their reunion lasted well into the night and even
continued into the following evening. In fact, Hector and Chavo accompanied Mando to his next wrestling
commitment and while there, talked to the large press contingent on hand. "It's nice to be back here in the
Northwest," Chavo beamed. "Both Hector and I loved wrestling here in the past but now we are wrestling
together in Florida while Mando has kept the Guerrero name alive here." The sight of the brothers together
prompted a reporter to ask about a possible full scale family reunion.
"That would be nice !" Hector replied. Several years ago, we wrestled together quite regularly in California
but in the last couple of years we have gone our separate ways. Now maybe the time has come for us to
get together again." "Right, brother" Chavo picked up the lead. "Hector and I want to team up again.
In fact we want to take on the Von Erich's ! That's our goal. The promoters behind World Class Wrestling
are afraid to match us against the Von Erichs. They know what we'll do to them. Actually, it's a natural.
We've lived in El Paso, Texas all our lives and we are Texans just as they are. In fact, I'll go as far as to say
that the Guerrero family is the number one family in Texas. Let the Von Erich family dispute this ! If they
have something to say about this, let them wrestle us. If they want to take this as a challenge, it is !
We have waited long enough for an oppotunity to wrestle them but they have constantly ignored our
requests. Now it's time to prove once and for all who is tougher, the Guerrero's or the Von Erich's.
Our father, Gory and their father Fritz battled each other for years and now we want to continue the war."
The challenge has been issued and the Guerreros are fed up and ready to tackle the Von Erich's.
A showdown is inevitable. Some day, soon their paths will cross and when they do fireworks will explode.
Until that day comes Hector, Chavo and Mando will continue to travel around the wrestling world to display
their skills and winning their fair share of battles with their own brand of mayhem. ( by Ken Hamblin )
