Forget about such bloated summer films as Para Para Sakura, Legend Of Zu, Love On A Diet and Full Time Killer. A low-budget black comedy shot on a shoestring budget, has beaten them all for freshness and originality. You Shoot, I Shoot's zany, very Hong Kong brand of humour comes courtesy of a quartet of the industry's more eccentric personalities. Comedians Eric Kot and Cheung Tat-ming, joined by writer- producer Vincent Kuk and writer-director Edmond Pang Ho-cheung, have concocted a farce that spoofs the oft-intertwined cinema and gangster scenes, at the same time illuminating the mercenary and enterprising sides of Hong Kong society. And those are two words that aptly describe Bart (Eric Kot, above left), a professional assassin whose negative equity (caused by the property market downturn) forces him to turn to ever more creative ways to attract clients. The same traits, Ieavened with a dash of intellectual pretension, are possessed by Chuen (Cheung Tat-ming, above right) , a NewYork University Film School graduate who'll do anything to become a Chinese Martin Scorsese. Mrs Ma (Miao Fei-lin) , an avaricious high-society client, who literally wants to see her enemies die, comes up with the basic concept of documenting the murders on video. Encouraged by a greedy girl-friend (Audrey Fang), Bart forges a partnership with Chuen, and the results are both deadly and hilarious. Pang, a novelist whose books include Full Time Hitman, does well in his directorial debut. There is a certain rawness that works in the picture's favour, but on the minus side there is a need for some tightening and editorial fine-tuning. But in the final analysis of summer movies 2001, You Shoot, I Shoot ranks close to Shaolin Soccer as the season's most entertaining picture.
