Click here and you can jump to another English Web Site. The ShakuhachiSelf IntroductionHello. I am one shakuhachi player. I belong to the Shin-Tozan-Ryu school of the shakuhachi. It's my pleasure to practice and play it on the stage. I first started learning it about 30 years ago when I was a college student. As I have continued learning it since then, I have met a lot of people who also like to play the shakuhachi. I feel I'm happy to have met so many people. Some are old and some are young. I'd like to recommend you to practice the shakuhachi and join us. What's the shakuhachi? The shakuhachi is said to have been introduced to Japan by the Chinese about 1300 years ago. But the shakuhachi in those days was quite different from those we are playing today. The original form of today's shakuhachi is said to have been first completed about 300 or 400 years ago in the Edo period (1603-1867). But in those days the shakuhachi was used as a spiritual and religious instrument rather than a musical instrument. It was after the Meiji era (1868-1912) that the shakuhachi is played as a musical instrument together with the koto (Japanese harp) and the shamisenn ( or the sanngenn ). The shamisenn looks somewhat like a guitar but its body is square and it has only three strings. Today the shakuhachi is thought to be a kind of essential musical instrument not only for traditional Japanese music but for modern western music. A lot of composers are trying to use the shakuhachi to make their works more attractive. The sound of shakuhachi is quite soft and natural. It is never an artificially created sound. We feel something like oriental. It is impossible to explain it in any language. So I have prepared some tunes here. They are only short part of long pieces. But you will surely feel something you have never experienced. I am the player.
The Shin-Tozan-Ryu school of the shakuhachiThe Tozan-Ryu school of the shakuhachi was founded by Nakao Tozan in the Meiji era. But after the death of Nakao Tozan the second, the Tozan-Ryu school was divided into three groups. The Shin-Tozan-Ryu school is one of them, but our school is led by Nakao Tozan Mitsuko who is a daughter of Nakao Tozan the second and the granddaughter of the founder Nakao Tozan. She is also a splended composer. She has composed "Manngekyou", "Hannari","Juugoyaniyosete","Sakurasakura"and "Fuji". She is still very young, so she will keep composing a lot of pieces from now on.
