2000.12.20 "Aerosmith, 'N Sync to Play Super Bowl"
Aerosmith, 'N Sync to Play Super Bowl

Super Bowl XXXV is shaping up to be one of the most exciting spectacles in its thirty-five year history, and that's before the match up on the field has even been established. Organizers have snared enough high-wattage talent to power a small city, as Aerosmith and 'N Sync will co-headline the MTV-produced half-time show, in a ploy to attract a younger demographic to what is always the highest rated TV event of the year, as well as the most-watched single-day sporting event.

"The Halftime show is an important part of the Super Bowl and one of the most highly anticipated entertainment events of the year," said NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue. "We are pleased that musical performers of the magnitude of Aerosmith and 'N Sync will join the list of the of E-Trade Super Bowl halftime superstars."

'N Sync's appearance at the event has created an unofficial battle of the boy bands, as their labelmates and chart rivals the Backstreet Boys will croon the National Anthem during the pre-game show. Also involved in the musical program for the game is the legendary Ray Charles, who will sing "America the Beautiful," marking the first time the two songs have ever been performed together prior to the start of the game.

Charles will open up the festivities, followed by the Backstreet Boys' "Star-Spangled Banner," which will be produced by the same man that produced  Whitney Houston's popular version of the song ten years ago. The Boys will add their name to an exclusive list who have already sung the national anthem, including Garth Brooks, Whitney Houston, Jewel and last year's anthem singer, Faith Hill. Aerosmith, who have been tapped to receive dual honors of induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the American Music Awards' Award of Achievement in the past two weeks, will have their biggest audience ever, as they perform in front of an estimated 130 million American football fans, and 750 million viewers worldwide.

If that's not enough to get you to watch, the U.S. Air Force will also lend one of their B-2's to buzz the stadium during the first song, then the elite "Thunderbirds" will fly over the stadium at the conclusion of the national anthem. The Superbowl will be broadcast live from Orlando at 6 p.m. (EST) on Jan. 28.

Shedaisy Fans Stay Merry Despite Blizzard

Shedaisy's first TV Christmas special, A SheVery Merry Christmas, put everyone in the holiday spirit, thanks in part to the weather. Although it was taped during a heavy snowstorm in Thanksgiving Point, Utah, in early November, fans of the trio remained undeterred.

"We had some serious fans that just waited forever to get there," Kassidy Osborn told LAUNCH, "and we thought we weren't gonna have anybody. It was a blizzard up until 15 minutes before the show."

"We had about three or four thousand fans at full capacity," added Kristyn."

"All you could see was these 'mummies' and eyes," Kassidy laughed. "It was funny! The special guests we had--no complaining! It was very smooth, and looking back, even though it was so cold and we thought we were gonna die, it was so worth it 'cause it turned out beautifully."

Those special guests -- Jewel, Brian McKnight, and Richard Marx -- join Shedaisy for A SheVery Merry Christmas, which airs tonight (December 19) on TNN at 8 p.m. ET. Shedaisy's new Christmas album, Brand New Year, is in record stores nationwide. -- Margy Holland, Nashville

2000.12.14 "Backstreet Boys to Sing Super Bowl XXXV National Anthem"
Ray Charles to Perform "America the Beautiful" At Tampa's Raymond James Stadium

NEW YORK - The NFL will celebrate America's 225th birthday in Super Bowl XXXV pre-game ceremonies as one of the world's top groups, Backstreet Boys, will perform the National Anthem and recording legend Ray Charles will sing "America The Beautiful," at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla. on Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, the National Football League announced today.

It will mark the first time the two songs will be performed prior to the start of the game. Charles will open the ceremony and Backstreet Boys will follow with its rendition of the National Anthem. Tampa's Tom Cooney will sign the national anthem.

Rickey Minor, who produced the sound track of Whitney Houston's popular Super Bowl version 10 years ago in Tampa, will create the track for the Backstreet Boys rendition. In addition to the musical performances, the Air Force will provide a B-2 that will circle the stadium throughout the first song. The Air Force's elite "Thunderbirds" will then fly over the stadium at the conclusion of the National Anthem. On the field, a joint services color guard will present the official flag, while the field will be virtually covered with other red, white and blue symbols of the flag.

"We are thrilled to have the Backstreet Boys perform the national anthem and Ray Charles sing 'America the Beautiful' on Super Sunday," said NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue. "The Backstreet Boys and Ray Charles' popularity and great musical talents are recognized across the country and around the world, and we are pleased that they will be part of our Super Bowl XXXV entertainment lineup."

CBS will televise Super Bowl XXXV live, including the national anthem. Game time is 6 p.m. ET. Presently recognized as the biggest pop group in the world, Backstreet Boys have sold more than 55 million albums in less than three years. The group's new album and fourth release, "Black & Blue," sold more than five million copies worldwide in its initial week, setting a new first-week record in international sales. Globally, "Black & Blue" -- whose 13-song selection features five songs co-written by members of the group, plus two songs solely penned by all five Backstreet Boys -- achieved platinum status in 22 countries and gold certification in 10 regions around the world during its first week of release.

At the same time, in the United States, Backstreet Boys -- Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell, AJ McLean and Kevin Richardson -- set a precedent by becoming the first group in SoundScan History ever to achieve million-plus first-week sales with back-to-back albums. This follows 1999's "Millennium" album, which moved more than 1,134,000 copies in its opening week.

Backstreet Boys will add its name to the Super Bowl national anthem list that includes: Diana Ross; Barry Manilow; Neil Diamond; Billy Joel; Whitney Houston; Harry Connick, Jr.; Garth Brooks; Natalie Cole; Vanessa Williams; Luther Vandross; Jewel; Cher; and last year's anthem singer, Faith Hill.

Few artists merit the title of legend. However, in the case of Ray Charles, the moniker is well deserved. An international phenomenon, Charles, who has a star on Hollywood Boulevard's Walk of Fame, has earned 13 Grammys, several gold records and the Kennedy Center Award. He is a member of three Halls of Fame (Rhythm and Blues, Jazz and Rock & Roll).

Charles has taken virtually every form of popular music and broken through its boundaries with such awe-inspiring achievements as the LPs "Genius Plus Soul Equals Jazz" and "Modern Sounds in Country & Western."

Rhythm & Blues became universally respectable through his efforts. Jazz found a mainstream audience it had never previously enjoyed, and Country & Western music began to chart an unexpected course to general acceptance, then worldwide popularity. Along the way, Ray Charles was instrumental in the invention of Rock & Roll.

Music has always been the driving force in Charles' life. It catapulted a poor, blind, orphaned teenager from rags to riches.

By the early 1960s, Charles had accomplished his dream. He had come of age musically. He had become a great musician, posting musical milestones along the way. Against seemingly insurmountable odds, Charles made it to Carnegie Hall. The hit records ("Georgia" and "Born to Lose") successively climbed the charts. He made his first triumphant European concert tour in 1960, and with the exception of 1965, has continued to tour Europe every year since.

In the past decade, Charles has taken on George Gershwin ("Porgy and Bess"), Rodgers and Hammerstein ("Some Enchanted Evening," "Oh What a Beautiful Morning") and "America the Beautiful" -- all with resounding, if unexpected, success.

Charles started out from nowhere and years later, finds himself a global entity. His amazing story and remarkable talents make him an icon of the human spirit. Years after overcoming incredible odds, Ray Charles remains an entertainment legend.

Minor is the music man behind Whitney Houston. "This young man keeps it all together for me. He is the best musical director, I think, in the world," said Houston. The African-American Minor grew up in the projects in Watts and was raised by his grandmother, in a two-bedroom apartment that housed 13 people. He's become a bassist, music director, composer and producer. He produced the biggest selling version of "The Star Spangled Banner" ever in Houston's 1991 Super Bowl performance in Tampa. The Monroe, Louisiana-born musician has played behind the Four Tops, Gladys Knight, Lou Rawls and Al Jarreau, and he has worked with Al Green, Shirley Caesar, CeCe Winans, Smokey Robinson, Brandy, Salt-N-Pepa, Paula Abdul and Michael Bolton.

Cooney, 65, has been interpreting the national anthem for 38 years in various stadiums and arenas around the country. A member of the deaf sports hall of fame, Cooney has taught many celebrities and sports stars basic sign language, including four U.S. Presidents. He also has taught school children for the past 16 years. Cooney, who became deaf at the age of nine months and who spent the first seven years of his life in a wheelchair before learning to walk again, has been honored for his hard work and dedication. He was named one of President Bush's Thousand Points of Light, and he has also won the Jefferson Award and the Nobel Prize for Community Service.

These "handiworks" are currently featured in a special holiday catalog on Shop@AOL, the company's popular online shopping destination, and offered auction-style through links to eBay, the world's leading online trading community.

America Online and IN STYLE Team Up With Celebrities to Lend a Hand for the Holidays

You've Got Help ... with AOL's "Helping Hands (SM)" Holiday Initiative, Featuring Celebrity Artwork From Clint Eastwood, George Clooney, Christina Ricci, Woody Allen and Jewel, Among Others

AOL Live Chat and Performance by Jewel to Celebrate the Launch Of New "Helping Hands" Catalog on Shop@AOL and the Start of AOL's 2000 Holiday Shopping and Giving Season

America Online, Inc., the world's leading interactive services company and IN STYLE, a celebrity lifestyle magazine, have joined together to assemble a constellation of Hollywood legends, sports stars, and celebrities for a unique online auction-style event and philanthropic campaign called the "Helping Hands."

More than 50 celebrities, including Woody Allen, Lisa Kudrow, Gillian Anderson, Ben Stiller, Magic Johnson and Kevin Spacey, are lending a hand to this important charity initiative, which will launch on November 9th with a star-studded event in Los Angeles co-hosted by IN STYLE magazine and America Online.

The "Helping Hands" initiative marks the official start of AOL's holiday shopping and giving season this year.

In support of this online philanthropic campaign, celebrities have created artistic interpretations of the "Helping Hands" theme, which range from paintings and drawings to sculptures and signed memorabilia.

Starting November 9, these "handiworks" will be featured in a special holiday catalog on Shop@AOL, the company's popular online shopping destination, and offered auction-style through links to eBay, the world's leading online trading community.

New hands will debut in the catalog each week throughout the holiday season, allowing fans to bid on and buy artwork from their favorite celebrities while supporting a worthy cause.

The Helping Hands catalog, which will be available on Shop@AOL at AOL Keyword: Helping Hands and at www.aol.com/shopping, will also link fans to the philanthropy portal Helping.org where they can donate money and/or volunteer time to contributing celebrities' designated charities.

Through Helping.org, one hundred percent of the auction proceeds and all donations will go directly to the celebrities' favorite causes, including amfAR, First Book and Higher Ground for Humanity, making online giving through the Helping Hands catalog easy, safe and fun.

Steve Case, Chairman and CEO of America Online, said: "We are thrilled to work with IN STYLE, eBay and so many celebrities to bring a focus to online giving during the holidays. We hope the Helping Hands campaign will both raise important funds for the celebrities' favorite charities, and demonstrate how easy it is to use the power of the online medium to make a difference."

"We are happy to be joining forces with AOL in support of this campaign," said Martha Nelson, Managing Editor of IN STYLE. "It's shopping with a purpose, and a smart way to give back during this holiday season."

Online philanthropy services such as Helping.org provide an important resource for the more than two-thirds of American households that already make charitable contributions (totaling $135 billion in 1998), as well as for those who are new to philanthropy.

So far, according to Independent Sector, a national coalition of leading charities and foundations, less than one percent of charitable givers do so over the Web. However, the recently released 2000 AOL/Roper-Starch Cyberstudy shows that 25% of online users are interested in using the Internet to make charitable donations and 50% are interested in signing up for volunteering opportunities.

Jewel to Perform at Star-Studded Launch Event and Chat with AOL Members on November 9

AOL and IN STYLE magazine will also host a celebrity event in Los Angeles on November 9 to celebrate the launch of the campaign and the Helping Hands catalog on Shop@AOL. In addition to contributing artwork to the catalog, Atlantic recording artist Jewel will lend her soulful voice and humanitarian hand to the evening with a special live performance.

The celebrity artwork, which will be featured in AOL's Helping Hands catalog over the holiday season, will also be unveiled at the party. Some collection highlights include:

* An original, hand-painted, one-of-a-kind cel (No. 1 of 1, created especially for this project) of Bugs Bunny lending a helping hand
* A red-fingernailed hand of dragon lady Cruella De Vil from actress Glenn Close
* A good morning sunshine hand by smiling AM weatherman Al Roker
* A freckled hand drawing by late night comedian Conan O'Brien
* A photo of Jewel delivering guitar-strumming harmony to her fans

Prior to the start of the event, AOL Live will host an online chat with Jewel, beginning at 10 PM/ET (accessible at AOL Keyword: Jewel).

A special content area commemorating the event and Jewel's live chat will include a gallery of photographs from the party, as well as links to the Helping Hands catalog on Shop@AOL; Jewel's charity (Higher Ground for Humanity); Jewel's official Web site; IN STYLE's recently launched Web site; and Barnes & Noble's Web site (bn.com), where fans can purchase a copy of Jewel's newest book, Chasing Down the Dawn (HarperCollins).

Other celebrity guests expected to attend the Helping Hands event include Pierce Brosnan, Casper Van Dien, Rachael Leigh Cook, Rachel Hunter, Rosanna Arquette, Tiffani Thiessen and Tyra Banks. All guests will receive VIP gift bags commemorating the evening.

A complimentary AOL membership, Warner Book's new Wired in a Week paperback by AOL's Online Advisor Regina Lewis, movie rental certificates from Blockbuster, silver bracelets from online jeweler Blue Nile and chocolates from Godiva Chocolatier are among the featured gift bag items contributed by Shop@AOL's premier merchant partners.

Helping Hands Catalog Kicks Off Holiday Shopping on Shop@AOL

With the launch of the Helping Hands catalog, Shop@AOL will officially open its doors for Holiday 2000. This year, Shop@AOL will offer a variety of next-generation shopping features, innovative holiday catalogs and new customer service features to make shopping through the Internet's best selection of brand-name products from premier merchant partners easier and more convenient than ever before.

Designed for both first-time and experienced online shoppers, Shop@AOL is available to AOL members at Shop@AOL (Keyword: Shopping), CompuServe members at Shop@CompuServe, and to visitors through the Web at Shop@AOL.COM, Shop@Netscape, Shop@Spinner and Shop@Winamp.

Holiday 2000 is expected to be another banner year for e-commerce, with analysts predicting that consumers will spend between $10 and $12 billion online. According to the 2000 AOL/Roper-Starch Cyberstudy, online commerce has become an everyday activity for millions of Internet users.

This year, over half of the survey's respondents (56%) say that they currently shop online, nearly double those who did in 1998 (31%). Similarly, the percentage of users who intend to shop online during the holiday season has doubled from 14% in 1998 to 28% today.

About the AOL/Roper-Starch Cyberstudy

America Online commissioned Roper Starch Worldwide to produce a random survey of 1,004 adults (ages 18+) who subscribe to an Internet or online service at home. Interviews were conducted via telephone in August 2000. This is the third Cyberstudy commissioned by AOL. The results have a +/- 4% margin of error.

2000.11.01 "Stars Come Out To Play Politics"
Stars Come Out To Play Politics

By SANDRA SOBIERAJ

LOS ANGELES - Cher, Bo, Ben, Whoopi. The stars are coming out this week for their presidential favorites.

Cher, the last to leave Al Gore's Westwood-area rally Tuesday night, was up Wednesday at 4 a.m. on the West Coast to give drive-time interviews to East Coast radio stations plugging Gore's Democratic candidacy.

Martin Sheen, who plays the president on TV's "The West Wing" and dressed the part for Gore's rally, worked the ropeline here alongside the vice president.

Sheen and a host of other Gore cheerleaders, led by director Rob Reiner, were packing their bags to storm Midwest battlegrounds later this week: Ben Affleck, Whoopi Goldberg, Christine Lahti, Susan Dey, Melissa Etheridge, Jewel and Alfre Woodard.

Because Hollywood generally tilts to the left, the stable of high-wattage celebs stumping for Republican George W. Bush isn't as full.

Action-movie star Chuck Norris was with Bush at a rally in Fresno, Calif., on Monday, and country music's Loretta Lynn pops up here and there. Actress Bo Derek, best known for the 1979 Blake Edwards' comedy, "10," is expected to help out, too.

Derek and the Oak Ridge Boys, also Bush supporters, were regulars on Bob Dole's 1996 Republican campaign trail.

During Gore's bus tours in Michigan and Wisconsin this week, rock singer Jon Bon Jovi raced ahead of the caravan to keep waiting crowds happy until the candidate arrived.

"I wrote 'Living on a Prayer' during the Reagan era trickle-down economics," he told a Michigan audience. "I don't want to go back."

In California after Gore's rally at a Westwood intersection, Affleck showed no concern about slapping an adhesive Gore-Lieberman sticker on what looked like a brand-new leather sportcoat.

"You gotta sacrifice for the cause," Affleck said.

"It's a $3,000 Armani but I'd throw it to the ground and step on it for Al Gore."

Asked one of Gore's young aides: "Can I have it, then?"

Celebrities out here aren't as careful as Washington politicos about the way they talk. Much of what Cher and Goldberg said about Bush on Tuesday night couldn't be printed in a family newspaper. Reiner taunted Bush as empty-headed and led the crowd in chanting, "No son of a Bush!"

The famous here are also not shy about some touchy subjects.

Chatting up the vice president's staffers, Affleck complained that they had muzzled the Democrats' biggest star, President Clinton, and asked them to reconsider. The aides asked Affleck to telephone later for discussion.

But Gore had earlier made clear, once more, that the question was not open. "We are not going to campaign together because I'm running on my own," he told Jay Leno.

Jewel Contributes To Rosie Album, Sets November Tour Dates

Jewel will join the line-up for Rosie O'Donnell's second holiday album, Another Rosie Christmas, due October 24. She's contributed a new version of the song "Face Of Love." Also on the album are Sugar Ray performing "Silver Bells" and O'Donnell joined by the Dixie Chicks on a song. Proceeds from the album will benefit the All Kids Foundation, which donates money to various children's charities.

In other Jewel news, the singer will release her book, Chasing Down The Dawn, on October 3. She is also playing some dates later this month and in November.

The November solo acoustic tour dates are as follows:

November 15 - Escondido, CA - Escondido Performing Arts Center
November 16 - Cerritos, CA - Cerritos Performing Arts Center
November 17 - Stockton, CA - Fox Theatre
November 18 - Santa Rosa, CA - Luther Burbank Center

Stand and Be Counted (Mon. (21), Tues. (22), 9-11 p.m., TLC)

By Laura Fries

HOLLYWOOD - It's been said that a single person can make a difference if they have the courage to stand up for what they believe in. Of course, it's even more effective if that individual just happens to be a world-famous musician. "Stand and Be Counted," a two-part documentary about singers and politics, covers 40 years of musical activism and its appeal and endurance throughout the generations.

Inspired by the book by David Crosby and David Bender, the documentary is a passion-filled but sloppily organized tribute to performers who lend their names in the hopes of helping others.

Editors Tim Tobin and Conrad Stanley appear overwhelmed by the wealth of material available, and many of the interviews are repetitious while others are plain mysterious. If this is a documentary about musician activists, why do we need to hear from Robin Williams?

Also perplexing is the fact that the major musical events are presented in no discernible pattern. Director Gary McGroarty jumps from Live Aid back to No Nukes to the Walden Woods Project without any regard for time or continuity. Although fairly traditional, a linear history would have worked fine here, considering the number of entertaining clips and interviews that would keep things lively.

As a result, some of the best moments, such Pete Seeger's recollections of Woody Guthrie, and the story of Victor Java, get buried in the mess.

McGroarty does manage to capture some of the more poignant moments. Among them are when an emotional Bob Geldof recalls the documentary that inspired him to start Band Aid and the story of the Sarajevo symphony cellist who played amid the gunfire for 23 days straight in honor of slain friends.

Still, the documentary could have included more information as to how effective these events really are. We do learn that Band Aid raised approximately $10 million, but it would have been nice to see the concrete results of other efforts.

Without that, the documentary lacks closure and focuses too heavily on celebrities espousing their political views. While the causes presented here are plenty worthy, the endless pontificating and posturing comes off as self-congratulatory.

It's one thing to hear Geldof or Harry Belafonte talking about the personal experiences that moved them into action. It's quite another to see Jewel waxing sanctimoniously on topics.

Of all the performers interviewed, however, R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe seems to have the best grasp on his role as a musician activist, calling himself a "celebrity carrot."

Tape reviewed was rough and lacked final technical credits.

Filmed in various locations by Gold Circle Films and Stand and Be Counted in association with Wave Entertainment and the Learning Channel. Executive producer, Norm Waitt Jr.; producers, David Crosby, David Bender, Joe Swift; director, Gary McGroarty; sound and music, Phil Blackman; editors, Tim Tobin, Conrad Stanley.

Jewel Sets September Tour Dates, Book Out October 3

Jewel will play a handful of dates in September starting in the city where she got her big break, San Diego, on September 8. She'll perform with her band at the Street Scene festival, followed by the Western Washington State Fair, then a few solo acoustic shows at the end of the month.

The musician/ actor/ writer has also set an October 3 release date for her next literary effort, Chasing Down The Dawn, published by Harper Collins. In addition, she's releasing a two-and-half hour CD and cassette featuring unabridged sections from Chasing Down The Dawn.

She told LAUNCH that writing can make things happen in life. "I think writing is a great thing because you hear your thoughts," she said. "You see them on paper. You start to see what you're thinking. And the world is a physical manifestation of thought. Our hands manifest what we tell them to manifest, right? Our hands do articulate what we tell them to do, and so the world then is a manifestation of thought, so we should be careful what we think."

Comcast subscribers will also get a treat as Jewel: A Life Uncommon, a documentary about the Alaskan singer will air August 27 at 8 p.m. ET. It includes footage from her life on and off the road, plus interviews with her closest friends and family.

Jewel's September tour schedule is as follows:

Lieberman to continue crusade vs. Hollywood

By Pamela McClintock

HOLLYWOOD - In his first public appearance with presumptive presidential nominee Al Gore, newly named vice presidential candidate Sen. Joseph Lieberman got in a dig Tuesday at Hollywood, indicating that he has no intention of ending his crusade against the entertainment industry.

Lieberman, a culture warrior considered one of the moral voices of the Senate, promised supporters that the Democratic Gore/Lieberman ticket would help parents "raise PG kids in an X-rated society." He praised Vice President Gore's wife, Tipper, for having had the courage to speak out against certain music lyrics, a move for which she was widely blasted in the 1980s.

Lieberman's comments came during a steamy campaign rally in Nashville to officially welcome him into the campaign fold. Gore gave a brief introduction, then turned the mike over to the 58-year-old Lieberman. The day's catchphrase: a better future for families.

Matching the showy agenda of the Republicans' convention last week in Philadelphia, Gore's team enlisted pop star Jewel to sing at Tuesday's joint announcement. When his turn came, Lieberman quickly steered the topic to God. "Dear Lord, maker of all miracles, I thank you for bringing me to this extraordinary moment in my life," he said.

Word of the VP pick broke Monday, with many political leaders praising Gore for selecting an Orthodox Jew as a running mate. Lieberman was also widely praised for integrity and consistency.

The senator, who's considered a centrist, has broken with his own party to side with the GOP in critical votes, such as during the Persian Gulf crisis. He was also the first Democrat to denounce Clinton for his affair with Monica Lewinsky.

Republican presidential contender George W. Bush's campaign issued a statement commending Lieberman's entry into the race, saying the senator and Bush share the same views on several key issues. Lieberman humorously begged to differ with that during his speech. Gore's campaign Web site posted an endorsement list for Lieberman Monday, and the first two supporters were Republicans -- New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and Scott Reed, campaign manager for Bob Dole's 1996 GOP presidential bid. Lieberman has allied with such conservative heavyweights as William Bennett, who served in both the Reagan and Bush administrations.

Last year, Lieberman lauded a study by the conservative Parents Television Council painting television as sleazy, suggesting that the FCC take into account the moral tone of programming when renewing TV station licenses.

Lieberman sits on the celebrity advisory board of the Parents Television Council.

Jewel will perform several songs on Tuesday (August 8) in Nashville in honor of the Democratic party's announcement that Vice President Al Gore has chosen Joseph Lieberman to be his running mate in his campaign for president. Lieberman will be the first Jewish vice presidential candidate in American history.

Clips of the performance may be broadcast as part of the coverage by the major television networks. Jewel will go on at 11 a.m. CT sharp at the Legislative Plaza entrance located at the corner of 7th and Charlotte Avenues in downtown Nashville.

2000.07.13 "Crosby Chronicles Musical Activism"
Crosby Chronicles Musical Activism

By Megan Bucks

When it comes to writing and singing songs about world hunger, poverty, and human rights, the legendary David Crosby has always been there to stand and be counted. And now the outspoken member of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young is taking his activism to TV, in a miniseries for the Learning Channel titled (what else?) Stand and Be Counted.

Based upon his book of the same name, Crosby and friends, including Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Brown, Sting, Harry Belafonte, Jewel, Pete Seeger, Tracy Chapman, Carlos Santana, Bob Geldof, Willie Nelson, and others, chronicle the history of music made for a cause. In both the book and the miniseries, Crosby tracks the evolution of musical activism from the non-violent protests for civil rights in the 1960s, to the No Nukes concerts of the 1970s, Live Aid and Farm Aid in the 80s, and the current annual concerts to support a free Tibet.

Crosby says the four-hour series, scheduled to air Aug. 22 and 23 from 9:00 to 11:00 p.m., is an overview of 40 years of musical activism interwoven with celebrity interviews and news footage, using the music of Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie as the documentary's "jumping-off point."

"We thought that was a salient point, and that those two guys were such good examples, that we could pick up there," Crosby says. "It went from there into the Civil Rights Movement, and that was a huge part of our story. The two major examples of activism in this last 50 years have been the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War. They were slightly connected, and they segued one into the next, and they overlapped."

Crosby, whose father made documentaries in the 1930s as part of the WPA, admits he was a little skittish about pitching the idea of a documentary to any network.

"I know documentaries are very hard to sell. Nothing blows up. There's no car chase. Nobody takes their top off."

Crosby proudly acknowledges two of his personal heroes for change are Gandhi and, "that kid in Tienenman Square, for standing up in front of the tank," and he insisted that music and protest are a perfect fit.

"Musicians have two jobs: to entertain and to be the town crier, the troubadour ? to say, 'It's 12 o'clock and all is well,' or 'It's 12:30 and it's not so damn good."

Although he cautions the town crier gig is not without it's share of personal responsibility. "One guy. That's what we're trying to get across," he says. "There's nothing more powerful in the world than an idea. If you believe in something strongly enough, and you are willing to stand up for what you believe in, it will affect people around you in a ripple that spreads out."

2000.07.06 "Spirit climbed to the four-million mark"
"The Marshall Mathers LP" Matches Up to Hip-Hop's Heavyweights

Slim Shady is making good on his threat to the teen pop and boy bands that he was "sent to destroy." Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP beat even Britney Spears to the five-times platinum mark (sales of five million albums), according to the Record Industry Association of America's June certifications. Eminem scored the second highest initial count ever for a hip-hop album. Only the Notorious B.I.G. 's Life After Death, which tallied six million in its initial audit, fared better. However, because Life After Death is a double album and each album is counted separately, The Marshall Mathers LP is so far the fastest-selling hip-hop release.

No doubt the Up in Smoke tour featuring Eminem helped keep the album a top seller as well as giving Dr. Dre's Dr. Dre 2001 a boost. Dre's album hit the five-million mark as well, making it Dre's all time best selling record.

Britney Spears flirted with a few records herself with Oops!...I Did It Again, which was certified at for sales of four million, tying Celine Dion (Let's Talk About Love and All the Way...A Decade of Song) and Mariah Carey (Daydream) for fastest start by a female solo artist. In other female solo artist certifications, Whitney: The Greatest Hits was certified double platinum, making all five of Whitney Houston's solo albums multi-platinum sellers, while Erykah Badu's Baduizm and Live went triple and double platinum respectively.

Matchbox Twenty and Jewel were the only rock acts to get multi-platinum certifications as the band's second album Mad Season by Matchbox Twenty is now double platinum, and Spirit climbed to the four-million mark.

New owners of platinum records include Staind, with Dysfunction, and Jessica Simpson, with Sweet Kisses, while A Perfect Circle's Mer De Noms, Mya's Fear of Flying and Pearl Jam's Binaural are among the new gold earners (sales of 500,000 albums).

2000.06.09 "Jewel Rocks Out in New York City"
Jewel Rocks Out in New York City

Though it might seem an unusual method to test out new material, Jewel took the stage Tuesday at New York's Hudson Theater to shoot her latest collection of songs for a promotional demonstration video. The concert will be used to display the audio and video quality of RCA's Digital Entertainment Center at RadioShack stores throughout June. It also served to launch the fall cable series Music in High Places, which the two companies are sponsoring.

"I think they only got me because Sting couldn't do it," Jewel joked. "But I love doing shows where people don't have to pay anything."

After a twenty-minute warm-up performance by Lyle Lovett, Jewel took the stage with a full band (including her one-time beau and co-songwriter Steve Poltz on guitar) and rushed through her earlier, softer material before getting to what she really wanted to work on -- her newer, huskier songs. Some, she said, weren't completely finished, joking that she would have to write the final verse to one as she sang it.

Referencing her past few months living in Stevensville, Tex., Jewel made it clear that she intended to roughen up her sound with a bit of heartland rock. The newer songs, played during the later half of her set, at times made the former folkie sound schooled in electric Dylan, Sheryl Crow and John Mellencamp. Yet she apologized for her vocals, passing her richer voice off as a sore throat ("Excuse the high notes, please," she said at one point). But she was clearly able to overcome that, shrieking and wailing with an intensity she hasn't often shown in the past. She even scat-sang along with her band mate's guitar, matching it note for note despite difficult octave changes, during a loose and rowdy version of "Who Will Save Your Soul."

Her songs, though always seemingly intimate, were also clearly autobiographical and deeply personal this time around as well. "No one has heard this before, except my friends," she said when introducing one song about a friend's slow death from cancer (the working title is "Violet Eyes"). "It's hard to write things that are close to me. I've always tended to write things that sound personal, when they're not. But this is."

In addition to modifying her songwriting style, Jewel also said that she's been writing more about her life in short story form. She said her collection of short stories, to be called Chasing Down the Dawn -- which will be out by Christmas on Harper Collins -- was written while she was on tour last year, mostly during short bursts of insomnia late at night. "It's an odd book," she  said. "It's not chronological, though it traces growing up to being homesick and other excerpts of my life. The focus changes. The tone really changes. There isn't one voice. It's not like there's a theme. It just goes from being very lyrical to very practical to very sad."

"Writing to me is my most important thing," she added. "When I get sick of singing, I need to do something else that's fulfilling, so I write."

2000.06.07 "Jewel Debuts New Songs At Private Concert"
Jewel Debuts New Songs At Private Concert

By Correspondent Dakota Smith reports

Singer/songwriter Jewel debuted three songs during an hour-long concert Tuesday night at the Hudson Theatre in New York's Millennium Hotel.

Though she is not on tour, but rather penning new material from her Texas home, the pop-folk singer performed as part of a concert co-sponsored by RCA and Radio Shack. The concert will be broadcast on televisions in Radio Shack stores beginning Thursday and will run until the end of the month.

Opening the show for the crowd of 300 was singer/songwriter Lyle Lovett. The Texan performed some of his older songs, including "If I Had a Boat," off 1988's Pontiac, and "Good Intentions," from Lyle Lovett and His Large Band (1989).

Jewel, whose most recent release was Joy: A Holiday Collection, in December, performed a set of hits that included "You Were Meant for Me," "Foolish Games" and "Who Will Save Your Soul" from her debut album, Pieces of You (1995). She then moved on to more upbeat hits, such as "Down So Long" and "Deep Water," as well as the more folk-oriented "What's Simple Is True," from her sophomore release, Spirit (1998).

"My voice is kind of hoarse tonight," Jewel said between songs. "Sorry about those high notes."

Nevertheless, the 25-year-old singer, looking decidedly sophisticated in an orange silk dress and black high heels, was energetic and in high spirits as she strapped on an electric guitar to belt out a new, rock-country tune that took her into Bonnie Raitt territory. Other new offerings included a Bob Dylan-esque folk song about living (and loving) in Texas, as well as a ballad that Jewel told the audience was about a friend who recently died of cancer.

The concert was part of a special RCA-Radio Shack promotion to announce that Radio Shack is now selling RCA digital audio and video products. The alliance of the two companies will kick off with an international music series called "Music in High Places," which films musicians playing at international sites such as Peru's Machu Picchu and Egypt's Great Pyramids. According to RCA, Jewel will film an episode for the series.

Steely Dan Honored at Music Industry Dinner

By Dean Goodman

LOS ANGELES - Veteran jazz-rock duo Steely Dan reveled in the years Monday when they picked up a lifetime achievement award at a music industry dinner.

One-time collaborator Michael McDonald dusted off two Steely Dan tunes, "Peg" and "Pretzel Logic," for the black-tie audience at performing rights organization ASCAP's 17th annual Pop Awards ceremony.

However group members Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, currently on tour in support of their first new album in almost 20 years, "Two Against Nature," did not perform.

In receiving ASCAP's Founders Award, which recognizes a lifetime achievement in songwriting, Becker and Fagen followed in the footsteps of previous winners such as Joni Mitchell, Stephen Sondheim and Smokey Robinson.

Fagen reminded the audience how he and Becker failed to make their mark as songwriters in the late 1960s before forming Steely Dan in 1972. He paid tribute to his influences -- "a lot of blues, a lot of Dylan."

Other performers included Christina Aguilera, who wowed the crowd with a soulful rendition of Etta James' "At Last," and Jewel, who performed a brand new tune "Break Me" and her recent hit "Hands."

The ceremony, hosted by the American Society of Composers Authors & Publishers, honors songwriters whose works received the most performances during the survey period.

Swedish tunesmith Max Martin, one of the talents behind Britney Spears, 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys, was named songwriter of the year for the second time in a row. He sent in a video from Sweden saying that he was busy with the new Backstreet Boys album. Goo Goo Dolls frontman John Rzeznik won the song of the year prize for his band's hit "Slide."

In the spotlight:

He's Ralph's kid brother. "The name gets the door open, but you still have to pass through it," says Joseph Fiennes, who won praise from critics and audiences for his performances in "Elizabeth" with Cate Blanchett and "Shakespeare in Love" with Gwyneth Paltrow. "Does it hinder? Enhance? I don't know," he says. "I still have to do the work." Fiennes, who was born on May 26, 1970, is the youngest - along with his twin brother Jake - of seven Fiennes, a gypsylike clan that moved more than a dozen times around England and Ireland during their early childhood. His upcoming films include "Enemy at the Gates" with Jude Law and Ed Harris.

Some life tips from comedian Drew Carey: Set goals, drink beer with friends and value what's in your heart and mind. Carey, who dropped out of Kent State University, told this year's Cleveland State graduates that he got drunk and overslept on the last day students could drop courses without penalty. His grades were D's and F's. "But look at me now," said Carey, who was born on May 23, 1958. "I'm a millionaire." He added that material goods aren't the most important things in life. "Things don't make me nearly as happy as talking and having a beer with my friends. And that's something everyone can do."

Lauryn Hill, who won five Grammy Awards in 1999, won the award for female R&B/soul single for "Ex-Factor" at this year's Soul Train Music Awards. Earlier this year, she was honored as favorite soul/R&B female artist and her album "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" won for soul/R&B album at the American Music Awards. 2000.05.12 "Jewel Sings in Defense of the Environment at NRDC Event"
Jewel Sings in Defense of the Environment at NRDC Event; First Annual 'Earth to LA!' Benefit to Take Place on May 31 at UCLA

LOS ANGELES, May 12 -- Multi-platinum recording artist and humanitarian Jewel joins forces with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) for its first annual fundraiser, "Earth To LA!," an evening of comedy, music and short films, to take place at UCLA's Royce Hall at 8 p.m. on May 31. Jewel will perform live in support of NRDC's cause. The evening's festivities will also be highlighted with appearances and performances by "Seinfield" co-creator Larry David, Al Franken, Diane Keaton, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Carole King and Rob Reiner, among others. A VIP reception will follow the event.

The benefit is designed to inform and entertain an audience comprised of 1800 opinion makers, entertainment community leaders, friends of NRDC, UCLA students and the general public about the important and crucial work of the organization. Event Chairs include Cindy and Alan Horn, Peter Morton, Robert Redford, Laurie and Larry David, Ruth Hunter and Sean Daniel, Susan and Ted Harbert, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., and Rob and Michele Reiner.

"For the past 30 years, NRDC has devoted its time and energy to protecting the Earth and its people," said NRDC Board of Trustees Member, Alan Horn. "Jewel is a strong supporter of the environment and we are thrilled to have her take part in this important evening. The Earth To LA! benefit will raise funds critically needed to continue our efforts -- especially in Los Angeles -- and raise awareness of the important work that's already been done."

Jewel made her recording debut in 1995 with the release of her first album for Atlantic Records, "PIECES OF YOU," which established her as one of the most gifted and accomplished young artists in music today. Last year, the album received the RIAA's prestigious Diamond Award -- representing U.S. sales in excess of 10 million copies. Jewel's second album, "SPIRIT," was released in 1998 and entered Billboard magazine's pop album chart at #3, becoming another multi-platinum success. Last fall saw the release of "JOY: A HOLIDAY COLLECTION," produced by the famed Arif Mardin. To date, Jewel has sold nearly 20 million albums worldwide.

Jewel's considerable achievements as a singer, songwriter, and performer represent just one area of her creative life. Her first book of poetry, A Night Without Armor, was published in 1998 and became a mainstay on The New York Times bestseller list. Last November, she made her acclaimed acting debut in the film Ride With The Devil, directed by Ang Lee (Sense and Sensibility, The Ice Storm). In 1999, Jewel and Lenedra Carroll, her mother and manager, founded the humanitarian organization Higher Ground for Humanity (HGH), dedicated to promoting human excellence.

NRDC is a leading national environmental organization with more than 400,000 members working to restore the integrity of the elements that sustain life -- air, land and water -- and to defend endangered natural places. Formed in 1970 by a small group of environmental lawyers, now a staff of more than 170 attorneys, scientists and policy analysts in four offices, NRDC is winning the fights that matter most for the Earth and its people. Here in Southern California, NRDC is: eliminating smog and enforcing the phase-out of polluting and hazardous diesel trucks and buses; protecting children by reducing their exposure to pesticides and other toxic chemicals; restoring Santa Monica Bay and preserving the California coast; and saving our national parks, forests and wildlife refuges from the threats of overuse, mining and logging.

NEW YORK, April 20 -- VH1's longest running original series "Storytellers" makes a unique human connection between great music and the fans who love it, spotlighting rock's biggest stars as they perform and talk about the inspiration and influence behind their hits. And it's done it 50 times.

Marking its golden anniversary, the hit series "VH1 Storytellers" premieres five all-new shows Monday-Friday, April 24-28, every night at 10:00 p.m. (ET/PT). "Steely Dan" kicks it off on Monday, April 24, followed by "Don Henley," debuting Tuesday, April 25; "Pete Townshend" on Wednesday, April 26; "Best of Storytellers" (featuring artists like Jewel, Dave Matthews and David Bowie) on Thursday, April 27, and "Stone Temple Pilots" on Friday, April 28.

From Billy Joel, Elton John and Sarah McLachlan to REM, Wyclef Jean and Alanis Morissette, "Storytellers" presents a wide variety of musicians in the kind of intimate setting that can't be found at a concert -- and gets behind the public image to reveal another side of the artist as they tell the real stories behind rock's most memorable songs with humor, emotion and honesty. After taping his show recently, Pete Townshend said of the experience, "I've enjoyed it really very much ... the intimacy of it has been great, like playing in my living room."

Highlighting the new shows debuting on "VH1 Storytellers Premiere Week":

"Steely Dan": Now reunited after 20 years, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker perform and reveal the obscure background about songs from their new album "Two Against Nature," as well as many of their smash hits from the '70s, like "Peg" ("This song is about either a mythical girl or a real girl ... I'm not sure," recalls Fagen), "Do It Again," "Kid Charlemagne" (which "was about the end of the '60s, but it was also more a metaphor ... not exactly about drug dealers"), "Josie" and "Bad Sneakers" (described by Fagen as "a nostalgic piece about New York City," written after the duo had moved to L.A.).

"Don Henley": Singer-songwriter Don Henley reminisces about the genesis of his solo smashes and Eagles hits, talking first about his childhood in Texas, where a neighbor would gather friends in his front yard for an evening of storytelling: "Around the fringes of the semicircle, I would play in the dark ... there was nothing but the smell of the grass, and the moonlight, and the starlight, and the sound of the voices" -- which led directly to "The End of the Innocence." Henley then pokes fun at himself and the current state of pop music by performing his Eagles classic "Life in the Fast Lane" as a rap song.

"Pete Townshend": One of rock's most revered songwriters, Pete Townshend performs and talks about how many of his compositions for The Who -- including such standards as "Won't Get Fooled Again" and "Behind Blue Eyes" -- were originally written for "Lifehouse," a failed film concept. "The story ... is simply a time when technology delivers on its promise," he explains. "The promise of technology has always been that entertainment will replace religion."

"Best of Storytellers": This special edition brings back the greatest moments from the VH1 series, featuring David Bowie with "China Girl," Counting Crows' "Rain King," Dave Matthews' hit "Crash," Jewel performing "Who Will Save Your Soul," John Mellencamp's story about "Jack and Diane," Sheryl Crow and Stevie Nicks together on "Strong Enough" and a previously unseen performance by Elvis Costello of "Just a Memory."

"Stone Temple Pilots": In their first show since several well-publicized incidents involving singer Scott Weiland's drug addiction and jail sentence, STP performs ripping versions of "Interstate Love Song," "Sex Type Thing" and "Plush." In a candid revelation, Weiland recalls his recent dark times, when he was led away from a concert directly to jail, and tallies up his days "clean and sober." The band's new song "Sour Girl," Weiland relates, "is about driving somebody away unintentionally, due to selfishness and self-seeking ... I was closing one chapter in my life -- a divorce." And the singer speaks of the beginnings of a new STP tune, "Kitchenware and Candy Bars," as from "a painful and heartbreaking experience, when a former partner and I went through an abortion. It was a difficult choice for both of us. But thank god we were able to have that choice."

A special "VH1 Storytellers" CD, featuring many of the hottest tracks from the first 50 episodes of the series, is scheduled for release on April 25 on Interscope Records, available at retail outlets and online at http://www.vh1.com.
