UN green meeting agrees to defer decision on pesticide exemption

Delegates at a United Nations environmental meeting in Nairobi today deferred a decision until next year on whether to grant an exemption over the phasing out of an ozone-damaging pesticide.

European and poor countries yesterday stood up to a U.S. request for exemption from portions of the Montreal Protocol, which requires nations to stop using chemicals that destroy the ozone, the Associated Press reports.

Turkmenistan Signs Caspian Sea Environmental Treaty

After backing away from an environmental accord on the Caspian Sea at last week's formal signing in Tehran, Turkmenistan returned to the table Saturday and signed on to the treaty, making it the first legally binding agreement of any kind between that country and the four other littoral states — Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan and Russia.

気候変動に関する政府間パネル(IPCC)第21回総会の結果について

気候変動に関する政府間パネル(IPCC)第21回総会が、第1〜3作業部会の会合も含めて、11月3日から7日にかけて、オーストリア・ウィーンにおいて開催されました。  今回の会合においては、2007年の公表を予定している第四次評価報告書の作成に向けた骨子が承認されました。今後は、11月中にIPCC事務局より各国政府に対して執筆者の推薦の要請がなされ、来年4月を目処に執筆者を決定し、今回承認された骨子に基づき執筆作業が開始される予定です。

U.S. Climate Change Initiative Has Little Effect, GAO Says

A new report by the U.S. General Accounting Office released late last month finds that one of the goals of U.S. President George W. Bush's Global Climate Change Initiative — to cut greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 18 percent between 2002 and 2012 — would reduce the rate just 4 percentage points more than expected if no action were taken.
