Wooden Tablet

Nara Capital turned to a farm before it took one hundred years since the capital transfer to Kyoto. Archaeological features were left under the ground.

The Nara Imperial palace Site is luckily located in the area which is the lowest geographical features in Nara City. So, wooden tablets were preserved safety.

It was found in 1899 that the ruins were the site of the capital in Nara Period. Government started getting down to investigate only forty years ago.
In Japan, wooden tablets were discovered for the first time in The Nara Imperial palace Site in 1961.Then above two hundreds thousand pieces were found out all around Japan,
and seventy thousand of them were in The Nara Imperial palace Site.
The letters written on the wooden tablets make the life of those days clear.
It is fact that elucidation of ancient history has not progressed so much without them.
There were extremely few relics written letters on. And wooden tablets which told us the real life of those days are very precious. We will never get them if wooden tablets go bad. Going down of the underground water level causes irrecoverable damages.
