UYD 5.0
Viewing Japanese Text on Web Browsers

The UYD 5.0 is a Japanese only page, so I'm offering this advice in viewing this site without having the actual Japanese operating system. Here are some suggestions.

With the exception of Shodouka,
all of these programs are for Microsoft Windows 95 or 3.1 (unless otherwise noted).

For Macintosh, there's MacOS-J/KanjiTalk or Japanese Language Kit.

Windows 95 Only

Netscape Communicator 4.03
(with Microsoft Japanese Multilanguage Support)
Yes! You can use the MSGothic font provided by the Internet Explorer Microsoft Japanese mulitlanguage support to read Japanese on Netscape 4.0! After downloading Netscape 4.0 and the Japanese extensions:
  1. Go to the Edit menu and select Preferences.
  2. In the Appearance-Fonts area, set For the Encoding to Japanese and select MS Gothic for both Variable Width Font and Fixed Width Font.
  3. In the Navigator-Languages area, add Japanese [ja] to the list.
Yoisho! No need for that Japanese helper application. Now, whenever you want to activate the Japanese text with MS Gothic, just click on VIEW in the toolbar, and then ENCODING. Then click on JAPANESE (AUTO-DETECT). To return back to your normal font, repeat this process, but use WESTERN (or your preferred font).

Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.02
(with Japanese Extensions)
By downloading Internet Explorer and Japanese Multilanguage Support, you'll end up with a browser which views any Japanese page perfectly.

Any Operating System

Shodouka
Easily one of the most useful sites on web.
Shodouka allows you to enter the web site address of a page and then replaces the Japanese text on that page with a corresponding kanji/kana image. Very nifty and quick.

Windows 3.1/95

MView 2.0
An excellent shareware program which allows you to read Japanese,
Chinese and Korean on any of your Windows programs.

Even includes auto-detect options for Japanese and Chinese so you don't have to keep changing from EUC to SJIS and so forth. It is unique in that it offers free larger size fonts available for download, which makes your viewing that much more enjoyable. (1660K)

NJWin 1.5
The very popular shareware program, very similar to MView. For more information, check out the NJWIN CJK Multilingual Support System for Windows 95 page. (1497K)

TwinBridge AsianViewer 1.1
A commercial program very similar to MView, but without the auto-detect option. For more information, check out the TwinBridge AsianViewer page. (1437K)
