Supporting Warpstock Europe 2011

IBM から OS/2 のライセンスを受け，Serenity Systems Mensysの主導のもとOS/2コミュニティの手により独自の拡張を施しパッケージングされているものが，OS/2 の新しい提案といえる eComStation です。 Warp Doctor にある Serenity Systems International の Bob St. John 氏へのインタビュー記事によれば，（Stardock が 1999年9月末に交渉を断念した）直後に e-business Operating Systems Solutions のボスに就任した IBM の John Soyring と Serenity Systems が交渉して，eComStation プロジェクトが誕生したのは 2000年春，まだこの当時 IBM は WarpServer for eBusiness （V5） ベースのクライアント（後の Warp4 コンビニエンスパッケージ）を発表していませんでした（eComStation - wikipedia 日本語版で「2000 年に Warp 4 の OEMライセンスを受ける」となっていますが，Stardock が Warp4 + FixPaks 6 ベースを拡張しようとしたのとは異なり，Serenity Systems が当初想定していたクライアントは WarpServer for eBusiness ベースで，当時の Warp4 で利用できなかった JFS と SMP 機能も含まれているものだったそうです）。

　そして Warp4 コンビニエンスパッケージ1（Warp4.51）をベースにした eComStation 1.0 に続き，2003年春にはコンビニエンスパッケージ2（Warp4.52）をベースに若干の拡張を施したeComStation 1.1がリリースされました。そして2004年8月には Warp4.52 に FixPak4 を適用した OS/2 をベースにした eComStation 1.2 が出荷されており，現在はメディアリフレッシュ版eComStation 1.2Rが英語・ドイツ語・イタリア語・ロシア語（開発は eCo Software による v1.2.5）・繁体字中国語版（βリリース）として，それからオランダ語版 eComStation 1.2 が提供されています。以前は先行予約として日本語版が注文できるようにされていたこともありましたが，現在は英語版 1.2 のライセンスを購入すれば，他の言語にローカライズされた eComStation 1.2 が ecomstation.com （要認証）から自由にダウンロードできます。

　なお eComStation 1.2 のライセンスには， IBM が提供する IBM Convenience Package FixPak 4 や Device Driver Fixpak 3 以外に次のものも含まれています。

　しかし eComStation 2.0 RC7 や Flash 10 Plugin wrapper for eComStation Technology Preview を入手するには，eComStation 1.2 と共に１年ごとに更新される Software Subscription Services を購入する必要があります（ダウンロードはMensysサイトから）。

ただし ftp.ecomstation.com （要認証）で配布されている eComStation 2.0 RC7 日本語版や RC7a 中国語版については，eComStation 1.2 英語版のライセンスキーがあればインストールできます。

　ところで 2010 年 5 月には eComStation 2.0 GA がリリースされました（現在英語版のみのため、 eComStation 1.2 と併売されています）。以下のバナーから公式発表へジャンプできます。

　

　eComStation 1.2 R をベースに拡張されている eComStation 2.0 では， JFS ボリュームへ直接 OS をインストールできる Bootable JFS がインストーラベースで可能になっています。この JFS（ジャーナルファイルシステム）はデータベースのジャーナリング技法を用いてトラブルで再始動した時に素早くファイルシステムを復旧できます。また長らく使われてきた HPFS（ハイ・パフォーマンス・ファイル・システム） にはキャッシュが 2 MB までという制限がありましたが，JFS（ジャーナル・ファイル・システム） に移行することで物理メモリの 1/4 （最大 1GB）までをキャッシュに割り当てることができるため，eComStation システムのパフォーマンスの向上に資することが期待されています。

　まだ公式ウェブサイトで紹介されていないようなので、以下に製品版の eComStation 2.0 CD1 で提供されている Quick Installation Guide より、 eComStation 2 で新たに提供される機能をリストします。

• ACPI enables you to use modern systems with multiple CPU's. and allows hardware that needs ACPI to manage it to work.
• The bootable JFS file system gives your eComStation a major performance increase and allows applications and the Operating System to load much faster.
• The Panorama video driver enables eComStation to work with just about any video card.
• Improvements in network support with include more NIC drivers and drivers for WiFi chip set. Support with the Samba protocol to access shared network drives.
• Major improvements in the installer to support virtual machines such as VirtualBox, Virtual PC etc.
• Support for booting and installing from USB-attached CD drives.
• Better support for modern hardware while preserving support for legacy devices.
• Major improvement in audio support with the updated UNIAUD driver
• Support of hard disks up to 2 TB.
• Comes with free virus scanner, ClamAV (see CD #2 for details).
• It is strongly recommended that you no longer use versions of eComStation older than eComStation 2.0 in conjunction with Windows Vista/7 because you can lose the Windows disk signature from your disk which can damage your Windows partition. eComStation 2.0 preserves the Windows disk signature.

　ただし 512 GB を超え 2TB までのハードディスクの全領域にアクセスできるようにするには、まず eComStation の MiniLVM を使って HDD パーテーションを分割する必要があります[you need to completely partition the HDD with MiniLVM from eComStation.]。 詳しくは製品版に同梱される Quick Installation Guide の 1.2 Empty hard disk bigger than 512 GB, No Operating System Installed の章で説明されています。

Warpstock Europe 2010 でのデモンストレーションによれば、近日中に eComStation 2 としてリリースされるのはドイツ語版・オランダ語版、現在準備中なのがイタリア語版・日本語版・繁体字中国語版、そして計画されているのがロシア語版・スウェーデン語版・簡体字中国語版そうです。それで現行の NLS 版 eComStation 2.0 RC7 で変更されている点（日本語版では一部未対応のものがあります）を以下に列挙します。

新機能

* Updated preboot menu system to allow target hardware selection.
* The trace (and other) files are now properly installed by clifi. This will produce more useful data in case the debug kernel is required.
* ACPI is now being installed in the form of a WPI package. This should make it easier to supply updates to an installed system later on.
* Accomodate installation of ACPI Warpin package in ACPI Wizard.
* Added and updated some documentation in ACPI Warpin package.
* Added a Video Driver Wizard, which allows to switch between SNAP, Panorama, GRADD and VGA drivers on an installed system. This will make it easier for people to recover from video problems.
* Added GRADD reset option in preboot menu (via ALT-F1).
* Updated LLAECS: it now should work better and prevent problems with netbios over tcpip. The default dhcp timeout of 0 seconds has been reinstated, but now LLAECS waits until it has a valid DHCP lease (up to 30 seconds) before continuing. This should be less, as soon as a DHCP lease has been obtained.
* EVFSGUI (the Samba GUI) now properly detects the status of network connections. This makes the tool a lot more intuitive than before.
* When ACPI is detected/supported the system will use the SMP kernel immediately from phase 1. This should improve the ACPI success rate.
* ACPI Wizard now applies /F switch to PSCOM.SYS if required.
* A new LVM wrapper is implemented that works around the problems of installing alongside a Windows Vista partition. This will prevent damaging the Vista installation.
* The order of HAB drivers selected in the preboot menu will be maintained throughout the installation, preventing issues with load order of certain SCSI drivers for example.
* It should now be possible to properly install on computers with 4 GB of memory.
* It is possible to install from an USB attached CD device.
* FAT32 support is enabled in phase 1. This makes it easier to read USB memory sticks (for example registration key).
* Beer battery widget will be auto-installed when applicable.
* XWLAN monitor widget will be auto-installed when applicable.
* USB stick holder widget will be auto-installed when applicable.
* It is now possible to boot with VGA, GRADD, Panorama or SNAP from the install CD. The selection will be reflected in the preselected driver in the installation menu.
* Enabled digital audio transfer on CD player by default
* Added DejaVu fonts as Warpin file. Makes upgrades easier.
* Added Workplace Sans font
* Added program icon for ECSRXLIB.TXT
* Enabled eStyler on boot CD

なお eComStation 2.0 RC7 以降から eComStation Installer がデフォルトで利用するディスプレイドライバが SciTech SNAP から Panorama VESA に変更されましたが，インストーラ最終段階の Post Installation Tasks でドライバを変更することが可能です。

さらに eComStation Newsletter | March 2011 によりますと、今後出てくるであろう各国語版 eComStation 2 は英語版 eComStation 2.0 GA で報告された現象（LinuxやWindows7と共存できない問題、またはインストールCDからブートできない環境）を解決した eComStation 2.01 refresh 改め eComStation 2.1 としてリリースされることがアナウンスされています。目下急ピッチで作業が進んでいるのはドイツ語・オランダ語・イタリア語版ですが、お約束として

とも書かれています（汗） 【この項，2011.3/21大幅追記】

IBMで公式に OS/2 が動作確認済みされていた機種（たとえばNetVista M42 Slim，ThinkPad T23やThinkPad T43など）ではもちろんのこと、（Pentium4 搭載機は Warp4.0 サポート対象にならなかった）類似型番でも eComStation 1.2 ならインストールは可能です。
そのため OS/2 コンビニエンスパッケージが動作するかどうかをチェックするOS/2 PCM Compatibility Program V4.91（2004 年 8 月 12 日）が IBM より提供されていました。そのドキュメントによりますと、 OS/2 Warp 4.5x クライアントの最小構成は

• System unit uses at least an Intel 486sx processor. If you plan to run the speech recognition tests, the system unit must have at least an Intel PentiumR processor, 90 MHz or faster.
• System unit has at least 16 MB RAM
• Hard drive with at least 1 GB capacity
• OS/2 boot partition with a minimum of 400 MB free space, which includes a minimum of 50 MB for swapper.dat. The networking test cases are installed on the boot drive.
• At least 230 MB free space for installing the base test cases. This may be the boot partition or another local (non-network) drive.
• CD-ROM drive

となっていました。

　また2005年秋にはeComStation 1.2ベースのLive CD（スラッシュドット ジャパン | eComStation Demo CDリリースもどうぞ）も提供されています（MANUAL.TXT には version 2.0 of the eComStation demo CD とありますが、最終更新日は 2005 年 10 月 12 日のままです）。eComStation 1.2 で推奨されるシステム要件は次のとおりです：

• Any modern CPU will do, but the higher the speed the more responsive your system will be. Intel P4 HT processors are supported, but eCS will not be able to detect it as a dual cpu setup in all cases.
• A practical minimum amount of memory is 64 MB but your system will operate considerably better when more than 64 MB memory is installed.
• AGP video board supported by Scitech Display Doctor. See www.ecomstation.com for a full list of supported adapters.
• When selecting more options in the installer, more drivespace is required. A practical working size is 1 GB.
• A PS/2 mouse is recommended for best performance.
• an IDE or SCSI CD rom or DVD player with boot capability supported in the BIOS to ease the installation process.

しかしながら OS/2 システム自体が古いアーキテクチャに基づいているため、またサポートされているデバイスドライバの数が限られているため、最新のシステムで動かすにはいろいろ制約があります。そのため、この現状を改善すべく開発されたのが eComStation 2.0 です。製品版に同梱される Quick Installation Guide の 2. Booting from eComStation CD #1 の章によれば、eComStation 2.0 インストールに必要な最小システム構成は次のとおりです。

• CPU Intel Pentium 133 MHz or equivalent (including Intel Celeron, PIII, P4 and AMD K6, Athlon and Duron processors)
• Memory 96 MB (absolute minimum required for installation from CD).
• Video PCI VGA video card with at least 512 KB memory.
• Drive space 600MB
• Mouse Any PS/2, serial or USB mouse
• CD-Drive IDE or SCSI CD-ROM

なお eComStation Bugtracker 0002712 によりますと、「Intel Core2 duo で物理メモリ 4GB を搭載した HP Pavilion Dv6には eComStation 2.0 RC7 がインストールできない」というバグ報告があがっています。その中で現状 SATA compatible モードをもたない環境にはインストールできない、というレポートがありました。しかしその後のコメント[2009-12-11]によりますと、CD-ROM Drive error trying to install ECS 2.0 RC7で言及されている

というエラーが出ている時はまだ OS2CSM という Veit Kannegieser 氏によって書かれた小さなオペレーティングシステムがあるだけで、この時点では OS/2 MBR や OS2LDR といった OS/2 コンポーネントはインストールされていないとのこと。この点について進展があれば補足します。
　ところで eComStation.Ru にはHow to select good notebook? （動作可能なノートPCを選ぶには？）という eComStation をインストールし易いノートパソコン選びの大まかなポイントがまとめられています。

　一方、仮想環境上に OS/2 をインストールする方法にはいくつかパッケージがあります。Virtual Box、Windows Virtual PC（出自は Connectix Virtual PC）、Parallels Desktop 4 for Windows & Linux（Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac）などが知られています。仮想環境へのインストール記事は多いのですべては紹介できませんが、「VirtualPCのおへや」に OS/2 Warp 4.0 インストール手順のスクリーンショットがあります。またOS2.jp フォーラム「virtualPC2004でのゲスト os（os/2 warp v4）」やOS2.jp ニュース : VirtualBox 2.0のコメントなども参考になると思います。個人的には非ネイティブの環境にはまだ興味がないのでこのくらいで(^^;

ところで最新の eComStation 2.0 にしても、IBM OS/2 ソースコードが抱えているバグや仕様上の制限事項をそのまま継承しています。そこで OS/2 のデザインをそのままに既存の技術を使って新たに構築しなおそうという試み Project Voyager （OS/2を新しくするVoyagerプロジェクト - スラッシュドット）が始まっています。アイデアの発端はマイクロカーネルアーキテクチャに移行させるべく進められた未完のプロジェクト OS/2 Warp Power PC Edition に遡るそうで、それから現行の OS/2 デスクトップに必要な仕組みをハックして調べることが始まりました（【タレコミメモ】「The Design of Voyager」バージョン0.1リリース - masakunの日記）。とはいえVoyager - Nikiwiki - を見る限り、まだベースとなる技術の仕様すら決まっておりませんが・・・

【2009.12/22 2:45追記】Team OS/2 Russian の手により WSeB ベースの OS/2 カーネルを作りだす OS4 Phoenix Project (Почувствуйте мощь OS2!)が始動しています。OS/4 Kernel と OS/4 Loader を開発中です。krnl_en.txt によれば、テストには Warp Server for eBusiness (Warp 4.5)+XR_C005 以降 で SMP 仕様の DOSCALL1.DLL が必要です。

eComStation DeveloperPortal

　読み方は「おーえすつー」です。 DOS 全盛の 1980 年代末に，次世代のオペレーティングシステムとして Microsoft 社と共同開発されました。それでビル・ゲイツも「1990 年代は OS/2 の時代だ」と発言していたのですが，開発方針の違いから両者の関係は決裂し，MS OS/2 v1.3 を最後に，Microsoft は Windows を，そして IBM は 32bit 版 OS/2 を開発してゆくことになりました。Microsoft が Windows2000 上で OS/2 16bit API（OS/2 v1.3アプリ）を，そして IBM が OS/2 上で Win 16bit API（Windows 3.1システム） をサポートできたのは，この歴史的経緯があるためです。
　OS/2バージョン2.x は Windows NT に対して好調な売れ行きだったため，1994年冬に IBM は OS/2Warp V3 をリリースし Microsoft に勝負を挑みます。結局 IBM ハードウェア部門 PCC がパーソナルコンピュータ市場のシェア奪還の切り札と考えていた OS/2 Warp, PowerPC Edition を，IBM ソフトウェア部門 PSP が正式版として提供できませんでした。

2005.2/19補足：PowerPC版OS/2に関する記事がVOICEニュースレターに掲載されました。

　そのためMicrosoft との直接対決よりも企業収益の改善を望んだルイス・ガースナー会長（当時）により「デスクトップ戦争」に終止符が打たれ，1996年 9 月にリリースされた OS/2Warp4.0 リリース以降エンタープライズユーザー向けに特化してゆくことになりました（日本語版 Warp4.0 without VoiceType リリースは 1996 年 12 月）。この Warp4.0 では英語版 VoiceType for OS/2、Java 統合、OpenDoc、Netscape Navigator 2.0.2 for OS/2 が初めて提供されました。さらに 1997 年 9 月には、従来の OS/2 のバージョンアップに代わるものとしてコンポーネントごとにアップデート可能な IBM Software Choice（会員登録パッケージ）が発表され、同年 12 月には Warp4 ユーザーにも提供開始されました。
1998年の長野冬季五輪ではクライアントとして大活躍しました。実際のところ 2000 年のシドニー五輪まで OS/2 がオリンピックのバックボーンを担っていたと言われています。そして一方ではこの間 IBM 上層部で OS/2 サポート中止が何度も検討されたことを、当時の IBM 会長ルイス・ガースナー氏は自著『巨象も踊る』第Ⅱ部戦略第15章「世界最大のソフトウェア事業を再構築する」でこう明かしています。

デスクトップで覇権を握れば素晴らしいかもしれないが，戦略的には・・・われわれが描くコンピュータ社会の未来像とは相容れない。最後のあがきは，九四年のOS/2ワープの投入だったが，わたしのなかで，OS/2からの撤退は揺るぎない結論になっていた。後はいかに撤退するかを決めるだけだ。（略）三番目の案では，撤退に五，六年かけ，費用は数億ドルかかるが，顧客がOS/2からウィンドウズやUNIXに円滑に移行できるようにする。かつての顧客であるわたしが下した決断はおわかりいただけるだろう。IBMでは現在もOS/2を使い続けている顧客にサポートを提供している。

　1999 年に Warp4 譲りのルック＆フィールをもつ Warp Server for eBusiness V5 がリリースされましたが、この時「クライアント版の提供はない」とされました。しかし当時の OS/2 インストールは 2000 年問題対応の FixPak 5 の他にも 8.4GB を超えるハードディスクを扱うための FixPak 6 以降の適用が求められるなど煩雑で、OS/2ユーザーによる新クライアントを求める署名活動が Mensys を中心に行われたほどでした。そのためか IBM は 2000 年問題対応を含む当時提供されていた Fix をすべて盛り込んだ Warp Server for eBusiness ベースの Warp4.51 コンビニエンスパッケージを Software Choice 会員向けに 2000 年秋から順次リリースしました（これが後の eComStation 1.0 のベースとなる）。
　2001 年 1 月 31日、Warp 4.0 のプログラムサービスが終了しました（Warp4 日本語版最終アップデートである FixPak15 の提供は 2 月 20 日）。この日以降　OS/2 の最新フィーチャーは Software Choice / Passport Advantage を通じて有料でのみ提供されることになりました。しかし Warp4.0 のシュリンクパッケージは 2003 年 3 月 10 日まで提供されておりました。
　2005 年 7 月に IBM が OS/2 Warp V4とWarp Server for eBusinessのStandard Support（有償サポート）　を 2006 年末に終了するとアナウンスしました。そして 2006 年 12 月 31 日以降の OS/2 サポートについては「● IBM 純正の OS/2 ライセンスが欲しいのですが？
～パスポートアドバンテージを攻略する～」を御覧下さい。

パッケージ製品（シュリンクラップ）が廃止されるまでは全国のパソコンショップや ShopIBM で気軽に注文できた OS/2 ですが， 2003 年 3 月 10 日以降からは IBM ソフトウェアのライセンス販売プログラムパスポート・アドバンテージ・プログラム（以下，PA）によってのみ入手可能になり，2005 年 12 月 22 日まで OS/2ライセンス が入手可能でした。

　2006 年 12 月 31 日をもちまして、パスポートアドバンテージ経由で OS/2 ライセンスや FixPaks が入手できなくなりましたが、米 IBM が公開している OS/2 Withdrawal from Marketing and Change in Support によりますと、IBM Global Technology Services による OS/2 サポートを受けている、既存の OS/2 を利用する顧客に限り、例外的に OS/2 の追加ライセンスが購入できるとあります。また OS/2 FixPak も Service Extension か TCO contract があれば利用できるそうです。

OS/2 Plans
There are no plans for any new versions/releases or new function for any of the OS/2 Warp V4 or Warp Server for e-business products or components.
OS/2 fix packs are no longer available without a Service Extension or TCO contract.

Existing OS/2 customers
Existing OS/2 customers can purchase additional OS/2 licenses on an exception basis. IBM will review each request and notify the customer if it is approved.

とはいえ現在も 米 IBM が維持している OS/2 サポートには、eComStationで取り組まれているような、「新しいハードウェアシステムやデバイス」への対応は一切提供されておりません。 【この項，2011.11/21デッドリンク削除】

ありません。しかし2005年OS/2World.comはソースコードの一部を公開するようIBMに求めるキャンペーンを行ない，2005年11月1日に11,613人の署名とともに嘆願書を現IBM会長Sam Palmisano氏に送りました。
ただIBMからの出荷は停止したとはいえOS/2のビジネスは2006年以降も続行されますから，IBMがソースコードを公開する可能性があるとすれば当分先の事と思われます。また前述の嘆願キャンペーンでも

We know that IBM faces a problem of making OS/2 Open Source because of the private sources from third party companies. What we ask of IBM is to release as much of the source as possible and list the OS/2 components that need an Open Source replacement.

と認識されていたとおり， サードパーティが所有するコードのライセンスの問題から，すぐさまインストールパッケージがビルドできる完全なソースコードが提供されることは望み薄ですので，たとえ公開されたとしてもオープンソースOS/2互換プロジェクトであるosFreeプロジェクトで不足部分を補う必要があり，OS/2をフリーウェアとして利用可能にするには越えなければならないハードルがいくつもあるのは確かです。

2006.1/1補足：だからといってOS/2World.comのフォーラム経由のPetition to release OS/2 for free(OS/2を無償で！)は乱暴過ぎやしませんかね(苦笑)

2006年12月現在嘆願キャンペーンには何の進展もありませんが，OS/2World.comでは打開策としてメディアの後押しを考えてSuggest Bountyで情報収集を開始しました。

それにしても20年前のIBMの中の話はなかなか興味深いですが，「Linux環境に適用できる」OS/2のコードってあるのでしょうか？移植してほしいものはいくつかあるのですけどね。
2009.12/1補足：広く知られた事実ですが，OS/2のオープンソース化はIBMにより却下されました。しかし IBM の返事は1万人以上の署名を集めた第1回の嘆願キャンペーンに対するものだとして，第2回OS/2ソースコード公開嘆願書の署名活動は現在も続けられています。
