この項の目的 Corelと言えば、MacユーザにはWordPerfect、WindowsユーザにはCorel Drawで有名だろうと思う。そのCorelが、98年末にWordPerfect8 for Linux Personal Editionを無償で配布すると発表した。日本語は扱えないのだが、多国語対応多機能ワープロとして鳴らしたWordPerfectである。何よりも無料だし（個人使用の場合）持っていて損はなかろう。この項ではファイルの入手からインストールまでを行ってみる。

ファイルの入手見つけにくいのだが、http://linux.corel.com/というサイトがある。ここからダウンロードの場所へたどることができる。download.comは混んでいることが多いので、世界中のミラーへたどることができるtucows.comの方をお薦めする。
ファイルは全体で28.6メガもあるが、7つに分割されたものもある。

一番上のGUILGOO.GZがダウンロードしたファイルで、それ以外のファイルは「tar -xvf GUILGOO.GZ」で展開したファイル群である。サイズなどを参考にされたい。

インストールまずReadmeを読む。GUIでインストールをするから表示環境はパーペキにしといてよという記述があるが、だめならだめでkterm上でインストールはできる。

このあと、何とかというライブラリのファイルがないからGUIのインストールができない、キャラクタベースでのインストールを行なうというメッセージが出た（出てすぐに切り替わってしまった）。
追記：今から思えば、このインストーラをrunlibc5のオプションを付けて起動させれば良かったのだろうと思う。それでうまくいったという方がいたら教えてください。（1999.02.15）

まずはライセンスに関する話。6ヶ国語で書いてあるあたりが、Corelの市場の広さを物語っている。

ライセンスを受け入れるかどうかという問い合わせ。当然「o」キーで進む。

Directory Name: e = Edit Directory Name:

インストールするディレクトリ先を指定する。何を思ったのか、最初のディレクトリ名は設定されていない。Linuxのディストリビューションの違いを考えれば仕方のないところか。
ここでは、すぐに外すこともできるように「/opt/corel」とした。/optは廃止される方向にあるようだが、既にKDEが/opt/KDEに入っているので僕としては構わない。

インストールするサイズについて尋ねられる。ディスクの余裕はあるので、フルインストールを選ぶ。

Existing Application You can pattern this WordPerfect installation after an existing installation of WordPerfect. By providing the pathname of an existing installation, the terminal drivers, printer drivers and printer ports that you are already using appear as defaults for this WordPerfect installation. If you do not want to pattern this installation after another one, leave the Pattern Directory blank. Pattern Directory: e = Edit Pattern Directoruy:

わかりやすく、/opt/corel/patternとした。

Edit /etc/magic? Do you want to add the specific entries to the /etc/magic file? If you choose to update the /etc/magic file, it will have the necessary lines added to it. The original file will be backed up with a .bak extension. You can make this change later by following the instructions in README.install in the wpbin directory. 1. Update the magic file. * 2. DO NOT update the magic file.

これは何のことか分からなかった。RedHatだとそういうファイルがあるのかなとも思うが、余計なことをされても困るので、「アップデートしない」を選ぶ。
追記：ファイルの種別を判別するためのマジックナンバーのファイルのことだった。TLJ3では/usr/share/magicに位置する。（1999.02.20）

次にプリンタドライバの選択に入る。数多くのメーカーと品番が並ぶが、面倒くさいので「all」を選ぶ。

プリンタを使う気はないので、最も無難なものを選んでおいた。

これはlpを選んでおいた。

その後にも色々続くが、あまり深く考えないことにした。

インストールを終わらせた後に、インストールされたファイル群を確認すると、やはり相当数のファイルが入ったことが分かる。
インストール先のディレクトリの下には8つのディレクトリが作られる。インストールしたディレクトリである/opt/corel/のtreeをご覧になりたければどうぞ。

起動いよいよ起動するわけだが、普通に起動しようとして
/opt/corel/wpbin/xwp

とタイプしても、「ライブラリlibXt.so.6がない」と言われてしまい、起動しない。

これは使用するライブラリの違いによるもので、TLJ3がglibc2を採用していることに起因する。従来通りのlibc5をライブラリとして使うように指定すれば、きちんと起動する。シェルから以下のようにタイプ。

runlibc5 /opt/corel/wpbin/xwp &

次回の起動を楽にするために、シェルスクリプトを書くなり、一般ユーザのパスが通っているところにシンボリックリンクを作成するなりしておくとよい。

最初の起動時にはまだ登録をしていないので、ユーザ登録番号を入力するように促される。各所に記述があるように、90日間は登録をしなくても全ての機能を使用することができる。

そうは言っても、ユーザ登録はちょっと長めのアンケートに答えるだけのものだ。削除する気がないならば、WordPerfectをLinuxユーザに無償公開してくれたCorelのためにも登録をしよう。
ダイアログにある通り、http://linux.corel.com/へ行き、ダウンロードのコーナーの「Registry Now!」（SSL付き）から登録を行なう。

登録項目の中でメールアドレスを記入させられるが、ライセンスキーは登録後のページに表示されるだけで、メールで送信されては来ない。忘れないように、別途保存しておこう。

使用するこれまた立派なマニュアルがpdfで入手できる。全765ページ、11メガというきちんとしたマニュアルだ。もちろんxpdfで読むことができる。ファイルは以下のURLにある。

WordPerfect8そのものは、至って普通のワープロだ。商用版でのみ使用可能な機能も幾つか見られるが、スペルチェッカーやちょっとした表計算機能付きのテーブル、HTMLの編集までできるので、日本語が使えないということ以外に不満はないのではないかと思う。
