First you have to hold a membership to access to Internet. If you got a contract with an Internet service provider, you already keep one to access. But if you don't, you can choose a good and cheap Internet service provider after deep consideration on an Internet magazine. There was a free Internet provider in Toukyou, but now expired. Among many ISPs, which is good or bad? I can't easily tell. Some ISPs require you to send your credit card number when you sign up. Be always sure how much it costs. Anyway it's not easy for kids and foreigners in Japan, I don't think.

ジオシティーズ GeoCities

GeoCities は とても快適です。容量も２MB（メガバイト）と大容量で、静止画像でも動画でも かなり いろいろなものが いれられます。わたしは、このなかに Macromedia Flash2（Macromedia社制作による動画をつくるプログラムの一種）、VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language＝「仮想現実表記言語〔むずかしいなあ〕」３次元で画像を表示するためのプログラム言語)ファイル、.avi動画（Microsoft社Windowsで標準とされる動画ファイルの方式）、16ビットステレオ .au（ステレオ音声ファイル。この ビット＝bitというのは 音声などの密度をあらわす単位）などを おいてますが、まだ全部つかいきれないほどです。とにかくアクセスが はやくて、トラブルも ほとんどない、というすぐれものです。

Quite comfortable to maintain your page here. The volume of your directory is large enough; it's up to 2MB. So I've been keeping many kinds of images and movies such as .spl for Macromedia Flash2, .vrml for Virtual Reality Modeling Language, .avi movie file, 16bit .au stereo audio file etc. But still there's some room to put. Accessing speed is definitely agreeable with 28.8K modem. I've hardly had any troubles yet.

When you use FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to transfer your files to the server, you can't see what's inside your directory. Even if your directory is full of files, it shows no signs to warn you. GeoCities explains this is simply because of security. Even though you need to sign up in English, you may present your page in your own language. Many Japanese pages are shown there. The supervisor doesn't care.

ここは、日本のサイトなので、日本人には快適ですね。もちろん、契約も日本語でだいじょうぶ。まだ、開設されてまもないというのに たくさんのひとが おしよせてますね。容量は不明ですが、アメリカ版と同程度のものがいれられそうです。もちろん表記はすべて日本語のみ。日本版 GeoCities は、日本人の日本人による日本のための無料ホームページプロバイダというかんじです。まだこれから いろいろと整備するようですが、カウンタやゲストブックなんかも ついてます。

This is a Japan's site for the Japanese people. Everything including sign-up should be done in Japanese only. It was open only in September 1997, but many houses (sites in GeoCities) are already full. As comfortable as GeoCities USA. Counter and guestbook service available.

〈問題点〉 Tips to check
FTPをつかって、ファイルをアップロウドするとき、ディレクトリのなかが みれないのは アメリカ版とおなじです。ことばについての問題はありませんね。でも日本語をしらない外国人には不親切、というより事実上入会するのは無理でしょう。

Almost the same problems as GeoCities USA. You can't see the contents of your directory as well. English isn't prevailing in this site. It's almost impossible to join there unless you know Japanese.

トライポッド Tripod

GeoCitiesについで おすすめするのがこのサイトです。容量もふえて ２MBまで可能になりました。.html（HTML＝「HyperText Markup Language ホームページを記述する言語のこと」）の文書の最後に、スポンサーの広告が自動的に はいってましたが、これからは はいらなくなるそうです。
Tripodには、無料でできる範囲のほかに有料でできるものもあります。契約するときに、まちがえて有料の契約をしないように気をつけましょう。

No. 2 provier I like to recommend you to keep is this Tripod. The volume was enlarged upto 2MB. The .html (hypertext markup language) file you send was automatically affixed with a certain banner to show the sponsor's advertisement, but it's no more.

There're costing services as well as costfree services. Don't apply unawares for the costing service. Always be sure you're OK to pay or not.

〈問題点〉 Tips to check
とくに問題というのはありません。FTP が多少おそいかもしれません。あまりおおきいファイルは さけたほうが いいでしょう。

No serious problems in this site. FTP may be a little too slow to put files. Large size files must be avoided.

トップタウン TopTown

はやくて確実で、とてもいい無料ホームページサービスですが、ざんねんなことに現在、会員募集はおこなってません。もうこれ以上新規の会員をいれる よゆうがないとのことです。でも 会員募集を再開するかもしれないので、ときどき ようすをみてみましょう。

This is another good site; it's rapid and adequate. But the free Home Page service is now closed. No new members are accepted because they can't provide any more domains for them. From time to time we should check this provider if they restart the free service again.

ユニオン Union

以前に この無料ホームページサービスを 利用したことがあって、そのときは いろいろな制限があったんですが、現在は そういうことは ないんだそうです。利用を再開して まだ まがないので ようすがよくわかりません。FTPが すこし おそいですが。

Last time I occupied an old site of this free Home Page service, there were several restrictions of usage. But those restrictions are now removed, the administrater says. It's not a long time since I renewed my page in there. I really don't know well about it yet except I found FTP is a little too slow.
