DIVORCE RATE
| Divorce rate is high in New Zealand. Some say too much degree of protection
is a cause. Even single mother without job can live her life by generous
social welfare system. Actually, I've heard the case that the majority
of parents of the pupils in a class have experienced divorce or remarriage. It's hard to link the peace image of New Zealand and the word "Kiwi husband" to high divorce rate. |
SUICIDE RATE
| Youth suicide rate in NZ is comparatively high by international standard. I don't know whether the high divorce rate causes this. An encouraging news is that the rate has been declined. Besides suicide rate, rates of teen pregnancies, drug and alcohol abuse are also high. |
CRIME RATE
| Despite the peaceful image of NZ, the crime rate is not low. Parents of
small children always extremely worry about abduction. People living in
suburb area never leave home with the door unlocked. If you go back home
after dark, you should use a car. Women should avoid walking alone at night
in downtown, because some places are dangerous at night. You may see hitchhikers on the road when you travel in NZ. But I was advised not to hitch nor pick hitchhikers up. Women should avoid hitchhike especially if you are alone. We need to keep those things in mind. |
CHRISTMAS TIME(25/12/2003)
| Some people don't have enough money to celebrate Christmas. They have to eat just a bread for Christmas dinner. Some of them even commit a little crime to spend Christmas night at a jail because they can be served a roast meat dish. People complain it's unfair. |
