Oh no, it's too late... NZ's bread is quicker to get moldy compared to Japanese one. I'm afraid Japanese bread must be added many many chemicals...

If you travel alone, you'd better share a pack of bread with somebody because it's too many just for you.

CRUMPET

crumpet It's uncommon in Japan. Crumpet is a kind of pancake for breakfast. Served hot with butter and golden syrup. It's said to be a winter breakfast. Why not in summer? (available all year round though)

SPREAD(1)--MARMITE & VEGEMITE

HACHI eating marmite Both are yeast spread looking like chocolate spread.But these are very salty.

It's far from yummy but even kids are willing to eat these things here. Why...?

If you try these for the first time, try a little bit.

MARMITE STORY

I read an interesting article on Japan Times on Nov. 17/2002. Which said...

"Marmite has been produced since 1902, which means that it's 100th anniversary. Marmite can be found in more than one in four kitchens in England despite the fact that a large percentage of the English loathe it.

Marmite resembles spent motor oil in texture, appearance and, some would argue, in taste.(YUK!) The basic raw material used in the manufacture of Marmite is spent brewer's yeast. So Marmite is rich in a number of B vitamins."

Wow, does that mean Marmite is as good as beer yeast supplements, which is very popular in Japan now? If it is, Marmite might have a chance to go into Japanese market, right?

"During the Second World War, British soldiers were likely to spread Marmite to stave off infection as they were to eat it. "

Someone said that Marmite eaters are free from sandfly bite. I thought it's suspicious. But if Marmite can stave off infection, it's possible Marmite keeps off sandflies.

I didn't know that Americans don't eat Marmite. In that sense, are English, Aussie and Kiwi so odd to eat Marmite at breakfast everyday?

SPREAD(2)--HONEY

HACHI eating honey Liquid honey and creamed honey are both common and cheap. Creamed honey which is uncommon in Japan is very yummy.

The best honey I think is "Southern Lakes HONEY" by FIORDLAND HONEY CENTRE(probably) which is available at the supermarket in Te Anau. Look for the yellow plastic bucket with white cap. The Quantity ranges from small size to 2kg(5kg?). $8.75 for 2kg at that time.

Another recommendation is the comb honey. Eat both honey and the comb together. It's only a half price of that at the imported products shops in Japan.

HONEY STORY1

manuka honey & clover honey There are many kinds of creamed honey. Clover honey is white and very mild. If you don't like strong taste of liquid honey, try clover creamed honey first. Generally speaking, the whiter, the milder.

Wanna try different one? How about manuka honey? Manuka plants have been used for remedy by Maori. Manuka honey has stronger antibacterial effect than other honeys. The taste is stronger. More antibacterial effect can be found in Active Mauka, which include bee poison. Active Manuka can be taken by mouth, or applied on skin like medicines.

If you want something Kiwy, how about Pohutukawa honey? Pohutukawa is called New Zealand's Christmas tree. This must be a nice gift.

Choosy honey bees I thought how come honey sellers can tell this is clover honey, and that is manuka honey. How do they control honey bees?

Recently, I learned that honey bees came from the same comb always gather honey and pollen from a particular plant.

Clever! Thinking about pollination, it's good for plants too.

SPREAD(3)--GOLDEN SYRUP

golden syrup on crumpet Actually, golden syrup may not be a spread. This is a spread for crumpet. What? you put golden syrup on bread? Well, it may be not too bad.

Besides spreading on crumpet, you can pour golden syrup on your ice cream, or you can use it when you bake cakes and cookies. For example, you can make caramel topping for your bakeries by mixing hot golden syrup and milk(or cream) in a pan. If you want to bake flapjacks, golden syrup is necessary as a sweetener in stead of sugar.

Golden syrup is available in 1 kg can or 500g bottle. Actually, this product is not common in Japan. But sometimes, you can find it at import food shops.
