WILDLIFE -MAMMALS-

Unlike birds, mammals are not varied. Indigenous terrestrial mammals aren't in NZ except for bats.

POSSUM

I'm a possum. You may often see mammals, right?

They are not native mammals, but brought by human being. The most common mammal may be POSSUM. The Possum is a pouched animal and brought from Australia. They look like raccoons, but not very cute. Sometimes you may see the possum bodies on the road.

They eat everything including eggs and chicks of endangered birds such as Kiwi. That's why they are targeted to be get rid of.

Recently, New Zealand is trying to promote possum fur.

FUR SEAL

Oh no. THEY are looking at me! New Zealand is surrounded by the sea. Therefore, you can have opportunities to watch fur seals in many places. Some colonies are so large that you might feel sick of counting them.

In some spots, there are activities like "Swim with Seals!" But according to participants, it was "Swim with Giant Kelps" rather than "Swim with Seals".

SPERM WHALE(07/2006กห

A whale starts diving. New Zealand is one of rare places in the world where you can watch sperm whales all year round.

If you want to watch them, go to Kaikoura on Highway 1. You can join "Whale Watching Tour" anytime except in time of rough sea.

You won't watch large jumps. Still, it is very impressive to watch a giant tail standing up from the sea when the whale starts diving. It's quite rare that you can't watch any whale. On the lucky day, you might watch other than sperm whales.

Worried about sea sick? You may watch whales from the sky!

New Zealand is a champion of anti-whaling. However, it used to a commercial whaling station.
