Recorded Sound: Sample 1.my_guitar.wav with
my crappy guitar and built-in microphone for vaio PCG-505G
-
As you've noticed, a built-in microphone for a laptop machine is totally
not good for music. The aim for such microphone is basically for voicechat
or voicememo. Also this case, I didn't concider the position of microphone.
Then the result is like this. You will hear a lot of hiss(some high frequency
noise).
-
Getting rid of hiss: Sample 2.my_guitar_dehissed.wav
by DART pro 98
-
It's surely dehissed, but since it removed some high frequency sound, then
the characteristic of the guitar acoustic was changed. It sounds like I
recorded it with very old equipments, also now the highest note is not
clear.
-
Mixed with some world music like drum loop and echoed voice: Sample 3.mix.wav
by ACID v.2.0
-
Mixing is a process that makes some sound pieces together. Sometimes, you
notice that what you are hearing can't be heard by others. Actually this
time, my_guitar.wav was placed just as a background and it's really hard
to hear. But since you know it's there, then you can feel it. The interesting
thing is, even so it does make a difference on the sound, the next example
shows such differences: Sample 4.mix2.wav by ACID

Digital Synthesis Basics

MIDI
-
MIDI is one of the format of describing music. Thus MIDI file is like a
sheet music. Computers or synthesizers will play according to the assinments
from MIDI file then music happens.

Sampling/Additive Synthesis

Fourier Analysis: Sample 5.output.wav by Probe
-
Probe is a software synthesizer. I took a sample from it, and analyzed
with spectralab. The result is like this.
-
This analysis is done by Fourier Analysis. Basically Fourier Analysis tells
us that whatever the wave is, we can decompose such wave into the sum of
some trigonometric waves(like sine wave). So the point is if you know the
frequency decomposition of the sound, you can create it. The idea of additive
synthesis exactly comes from this point.

Subtractive Synthesis: Sample 10.white_noise.wav
by cool edit pro
-
I filtered this white noise into some filters, and these are the result.
-
Low Pass Filter 3000Hz: Sample 11.below3000.wav
-
High Pass Filter 3000Hz: Sample 12.above3000.wav
-
Band Pass Filter between 1000Hz and 3000Hz: Sample 13.bet1000-3000.wav
-
The result after several random band stop filter: Sample 14.my_subtractive.wav
-
It was like caving. That's why named subtractive. Notice that since it's
made from white noise, there are some unpredictable waves with in the frequency
range. It's actually the characteristic of this synthesis.
