Referendum, a total failure
Farooq Tariq(LLP general secretary)
The referendum called by the military ruler of Pakistan proved to be a total failure for him. Not more than 5% of the total voters went to the polls. Government claim over 60% turn out, a real joke and a sheer lie in the face of the whole world. All most all the national and international news papers are crying that they have not seen any queus on the poling station and it lacks any enthusiasm. Daily Dawn Pakistan has gone in detail how the people of Pakistan have boycotted the referendum in all cities. But government ministers are insisting that they have got the historic "mandate".
The Lahore Mayer is been quoted to say that over 70% turn out in Lahore and today the election commission said that 1.9 million voters have gone to polls in Lahore and 2.1 million have remained at home. That is another massive lie. It is total fraud. It is total lie in true meaning of the term.
LPP monitoring teams where ever LPP had basis, reported on the day that working class have given its verdict on the military ruler that is a total boycott. Those government employees who were forced to vote at their institutions, majority of them voted "no" to Musharaf.
We in Lahore visited many poling stations and the poling stations were like deserted places contrary to the past practices. At one poling station, till 3pm, only 3 votes were caste and there were over 1200 on the list. The local counsilors were asked to bring the voters to poling stations. But no one listened to them and they were humiliated by their past voters.
What the military ruler has done for us was the common question asked by the people, who were persuaded to vote for Musharaf. It was total shame for these local counselors who were made to believe that if Musharaf survive, they can remain counsilors otherwise, they had to go as well.
Every union council was given Rupees 25000 ($400) for the free food for the would be voters. They were disappointed that even free food could not bring the people to vote. Most of the public transport was captured by the local administration three days before to bring the voters to the polls. There empty wagons running every where in Lahore.
A massive campaign of color posters of Musharaf brought only anger among the working people. It is estimated that over 12 billion Rupees have been wasted of public funds on this effort of the military ruler to legalize it self. (以下省略)
