Happy New Year- 1999!!! This year promises to be one of the best years for me. In a few weeks I will marry an incredible woman- a beautiful, intelligent, accomplished science writer and anthropologist. The wedding will be spectacular!
今年は、私にとって最良の年になりそうです。数週間後には、とても信じられないような女性と結婚します。大変美し く、知的で著名なサイエンス・ライターで人類学者です。結婚式は豪華なものになるでしょう。

In the meanwhile, I have news that the Japanese cult Aum Shinrikyo is on the rise- despite the fact that cult leaders confessed to making and using a type of sarin nerve gas on unsuspecting citizens- killing more than two dozen and injuring more than 5000.

A few years ago, 60 Minutes, the TV show, flew me to Tokyo to be their "expert" for a show. Shoko Asahara- the half-blind cult leader who claims to be Jesus Christ and Lord Buddha in person was captured when I was in Japan and still remains behind bars. During the visit, I went to the cult compound near Mt. Fuji, interviewed former members, and reviewed sophisticated recruitment videotapes.

Later, I did counseling with a top leader of the cult. It was one of the most frightening, most difficult cases of my career. Fortunately, it was successful but I am not permitted to discuss details of the case. I can say that the cult recruits some of the most intelligent, most educated people and uses extensive brainwashing and mind control methods to indoctrinate its followers.

Unfortunately, I fear we will see many more destructive cults like Aum arise in the coming years of the "Millennium." The public can no longer afford to ignore the cult issue. The terrorist cults make it imperative to do much more widespread activities. The average citizen has to do more than learn how to protect their friends and family from recruitment. It is time to create a global awareness about the potential ethical uses and illegal and immoral abuses of mind control techniques.
